Democratic Senate leaders say they will not take up bill amended by House Republicans: "We're done." http://thehill.com/homenews/house/275099-senate-democratic-leaders-say-they-will-reject-house-changes-to-tax-bill-
The House Republicans have two choices: cut their losses and pass the deal now, or else put up a fight they cannot win and pass the same deal a few days now after being further humiliated, said a Senate Democratic leadership aide.
Another senior Democratic aide said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will not reconsider the bill, which passed by a vote of 89 to 8.
Were done, said the aide.

(167 posts)It will push the debt ceiling fight a considerable distance down the road.

(2,921 posts)Obama can ignore the debt ceiling and tell them to fuck off.
We have a royal flush type hand, and the Republicans are trying to win with a 6 high.

@ThePlumLineGS If House Rs killing WH-McConnell deal isn't enough to persuade media figures to drop false equivalence BS, nothing will

(3,170 posts)The 14th Amendment allows the President to take that matter in his own hands, and he should. What can happen is that he can let the Republicans play every single obstructionist card in their hand and then he can still stand there holding the trump card and all the decks.

(14,561 posts)and this was TOTALLY predictable.
They could not get anything done, so they pouted and said the senate had to act first.
The senate gets the deal done, and they want to make demands after punting.
Boehner needs to sack up and put it up for a straight up and down vote.

(8,821 posts)Congressional Democrats really only have two choices of action:
1. They can continue giving way on their principles until they finally reach an agreement with Tea Party radicals, an agreement which gives those government-hating fanatics literally everything they want. By doing this Democrats will be surrendering to a Republican Party which does not give a damn about most Americans and has the best interests of only multimillionaires and billionaires at heart.
2. They can stand for the principles they were elected to defend, even if it means letting the Republicans wreck this deal and allow automatic spending cuts to the Federal budget and tax increases for all Americans.
If Democrats choose the latter option (as I hope they will) they must never let the voters forget what has happened. They must constantly reinforce the reality of how the Republicans failed to even minimally cooperate with the clear mandate won by our President in November, how a handful of old, filthy rich men pull all the strings of control in that political party and how the Tea Party and ultra Conservative Republicans must not be returned to the House in 2014. If this is done, in 2015 we may finally once again have a government run by the sane!

(8,821 posts)Republicans have sold out to Grover Norquist and the ultra-wealthy so thoroughly that they can no longer agree to anything other than one party control of our government. The "one party" being their own of course.

(1,555 posts)The re-instatement of raises affects ALL federal employees. Not JUST Congress.
I should have read it all, well partly agree with her.
