The Globe uncovered the news after inquiring why Kerry was sporting two nasty black eyes today at a White House ceremony in which President Obama feted the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.
It turns out he got whacked playing hockey. And his sporting position might come as a surprise to the constituents who elected the senior Democrat from Massachusetts to his fifth term in 2008.
Kerrys office said the pair of shiners were the result of a busted nose that the 68-year-old politico sustained on the ice when he was smacked in the face with a hockey stick during a game with friends and family over the holidays.

(8,244 posts)I like John Kerry and voted for him. He would have made a great president.
He's almost certainly telling the truth about this injury. I doubt it is a case of "Botox gone wrong" or anything like that.

(21,596 posts)I once got hit under the eye with a raquet ball raquet (I was wearing protective goggles, thank goodness.) and I got a HUGE shiner. Since I'm a girl and I wear glasses, makeup and the glasses mostly hid my black eye when I went back to work on Monday morning.
I hope that the Senator feels (and looks) better soon.

(4,820 posts)The kids are all used to them and are not as careful to keep their sticks under control. I played for years without injury while not wearing helmet or face shield...but as I played more and more with the younger kids, I noticed a lot more sticks flying around at eye level. Soon, I joined them in wearing helmet and cage even in pick-up games.
I'm not saying people are driving more recklessly now that they are wearing seatbelts though.....just saying.

John Kerry is really too old for a "pick up" game of ice hockey, IMO. Really, what was he thinking?

(8,646 posts)back when my dad was younger as well, there was a goalie that was 76 years old! My dad himself had to stop playing at age 50-something after a hip replacement especially since it severely limited his flexibility (he was also a goalie) but plenty of his friends still play (they'd all be 55-65 now). I have no doubt there are plenty of 60 somethings and even 70-somethings still playing in his old league. Not totally unusual.

(63,892 posts)Now that we are seniors, we and our friends are all talking about going into/coming home from rehab after one or another body part is replaced. My husband, age 71, is coming home later this from rehab for a ruptured disc and I have had to make some significant retrofitting of our house to accommodate his condition (he was working out at the gym up to Thanksgiving, when the rupture happened). Aging spines, brittle bones, failing eyesight, are all part of the aging process. I never dreamed any of this would happen to us, when years ago I whirled around in Jazzercise classes.
You don't THINK you'll ever be "old," but your body does age, even if you've been in great shape in your earlier years.

(63,892 posts)Ice hockey is rough. Falls are a real problem. Older folks have to be careful since their bones are more brittle and broken bones with the elderly is a bad thing. Falling on ice, yikes!

(12,233 posts)Kerry has played hockey for many years, typically in the forward/right wing position. The centrist lawmaker and former presidential contender also participates in the Congressional Hockey Challenge, a charity event between lawmakers and lobbyists that raises thousands of dollars for the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club in Washington D.C.
Notice the fundraising hockey challenge that has taken place for years between politicians and lobbyists... Quite telling how infectious these lobbyists are...

a bold man for still playing the game two and half years after hip surgery. Was it the right decision to play at that age? Who knows.

(63,892 posts)two black eyes and a broken nose doesn't speak to me of an intelligent choice of sports for an elderly man. Geez, can common sense invade here? I mean, really?

...sure he knows how old he is, but what exactly makes him "an idiot" for playing hockey?
Seems like you're having a private Kerry bashing fest using the fact that he was injured as the excuse.
It's a bit strange, but carry on.

(63,892 posts)I have a family member in MA who worked on his prez campaign. I 'm not against the guy AT ALL.
I just think old guys shouldn't push that envelope. Take it from me: I have had real world experience in this. Even if you are working out in the gym several times a week, you can still have problems! And there you are!
My husband is in rehab even as we speak. He may or may not come home after 3 weeks of rehab therapy. This ain't fun folks...not for people in late 60s and early 70s.
Don't be smug. Your time (or your parents time) will come...

Sorry, this was a boneheaded move on Sen. Kerry's part. OK, my opinion...sorry...
I love John Kerry. I voted for him. I was devastated when he lost in 2004.
This move of John Kerry's was DUMB.
And can we move on? I hope so...

You may not have experienced what I have: a family member who needs PT and OT as a result of a spinal weakness or a knee or hip replacement. OK, I get that; I didn't know about it until I did! But WOW, when you find out what happens, you change your whole mindset. You realize that you are no longer bulletproof. You have weaknesses. You need help. You need physical therapists and occupational therapists. They help you cope with getting through your daily routines. Don't sneer. Don't laugh.
Your time will come...if you live long enough...
