Not to nominate Boehner highlights their extreme disfunction. The odds were, likely, that in lieu of Boehner, Cantor probably would have been their nom. And, that's good for nobody but Cantor and the teaparty.

So the absolute majority needed is (assuming all present vote) 429/2 = 214.5 = 215.

I suspect the explanation is that no one else was nominated/seconded for consideration during the Republican conference meeting that precedes the actual floor vote by the entire House. (I've read that Gohmert nominated Gingrich but no one in the conference seconded his nomination).

They don't have a breakdown though. A bunch were for someone (e.g., I heard a "Colin Powell" an "Eric Cantor" and an "Alan West"...
