That would have been fun. In a terrifying way. Do you think he would have put a gun to the head of a recalcitrant committee chair?

I would double triple the Secret Service on the Pres and VP.

I'm not worried about what West would do (though maybe I should be...), I'm worried about what the Tea Partisans would do with him just two heartbeats from the White House.

Maybe then enough (R)s would have peeled away from Boner for us to have a Speaker who is not even in The House anymore.

How much fun would that have been?

The threshhold moved down to 214 needed to win instead of 217.

The six sitting it out were Democrats.

That's how Boehner was insured victory because to defeat Boehner, 21 Republicans needed to jump ship and all they had going into the vote were "20 solid votes".

In fact, 5 of those twenty didn't even vote on the first round. When it became obvious what was happening, Michelle Bachmann put Boehner over the top.

I was stunned to learn this a couple of days ago from Stinky The Clown
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2114834

And he was correct.

The Constitution does not require that the speaker be an elected Member of Congress, but no non-member has ever been elected to the office.[1]
