Police Turned Away from St. Louis area Denny's for Carrying Firearms

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Belleville police have been banned from eating at the local Denny’s restaurant while on duty.

According to FOX2Now, a manager at Denny’s turned away a group of armed officers on New Year’s Day. Bellevile Police Captain Don Sax said the refusal was a slap in the face.

“It’s completely disrespectful,” he said. “How can anyone think to tell a police officer you can’t be in here with your gun? It’s absurd to me.”

Denny’s released a statement that said in-part, “Denny’s policy permits law enforcement officials to carry their firearms in the restaurant and we regret any misunderstanding.”

24. That's right. I was a victim of theft twice .....

Once my car was broken into and an expensive stereo system stolen. Also broke the glass and damaged the door which was significant $$$$. The other time my garage was broken into and a racing bicycle stolen. Both times when I called the cops (in Salinas, CA) they said they don't even respond or file reports for such trivial crimes. If I needed a report for insurance purposes I needed to make an appointment to come to the police station and pay a fee to get a report.

Some states have specific-signage laws. That means that the no-guns sign has to EXACTLY fit the state description, including the placement, size, and wording, or it is invalid.

Businesses have to comply with all kinds of bureaucratic stuff, one more specific legal posting correctly sized and placed is no big deal.

that we are in close proximity to a gun numberous times throughout the day without our even knowing about it. A 'gun free zone' or a 'no guns allowed sign' does nothing but make people falsely believe they are 'safer' by thinking there are no guns near them, when in reality the guns are there.

I am not a gun owner, but believe I would respect the unjustified fears of the business owner if they posted 'no guns allowed.' Either that or not give them my business.

People who bring guns into their places, "concealed" or not, are dealt with very harshly. Imagine Fight Club, no Grey Goose, cheap Western biker bar crazy and you'll be close. The atmosphere is always very civil and enjoyable until it's not.

Myself, I'd think anyone who brought a concealed weapon into my place was an asshole. Then I'd do my very charming best to avoid the familiar mayhem and take the gun away for safekeeping, permanently perhaps if the carrier was an exceptionally obnoxious asshole.

One of my personal mottoes is, "What are they going to do, shoot me?"

You should come to my place sometime. I've been thinking about creating an artwork of guns welded together and rendered useless. Would you like to contribute? A well loved Glock or two would be especially welcome as most of the sculpture will probably be cheap crap.

Care to explain exactly how you know if a person is carrying a 'concealed' weapon? Seeing how you are so familiar with the mayhem that always results from concealed carry, you must have a fool proof way, right?

May I ask you why you carry a gun?

I know why cops carry guns, and I know why kid gangsters in our neighborhood carry guns. The kid gangsters are afraid, and the cops are a little afraid too.

Personally I've never been in a situation where more guns would have improved the outcome.

I've occasionally found myself in very violent and uncomfortable places. As a mature adult I do my best to avoid those situations. So far in this 21st century I haven't yet been scolded by the cops for being a reckless idiot. It seems I can keep my millennial new year's resolutions, if not the annual ones. If it happened again my wife would be really, really pissed off and my kids wouldn't respect me. I'm no good to them dead.

Going back further, I'm entirely unequipped to deal with the political problems of Serbia. Fuck that shit. I'd rather jump out of a moving car.

I've been robbed at gunpoint. One time I confronted some guys who were loading my tools into their truck. In the thick of it I decided it would be a whole lot less bother letting them take my tools than any wild west shootout might have been. Mind you, this was the first radial saw I'd ever bought for myself, my own money, gone. In hindsight I shouldn't have left the saw in the parking lot while I was working inside. It was a bad neighborhood.

Another time I was mugged by a guy with a knife. But somewhere in that robbery attempt the robber had second thoughts when he realized he was a very shaky junkie who needed a fix and I was a nice big guy, a slightly inebriated pacifist, who'd have been greatly troubled if the situation turned violent and I'd been forced to take his knife.

It's no "tough guy act" about my familiar mayhem... I've got many excellent childhood memories like the time my great grandma threatened my dad with a knife. It was scary as hell because great grandma had a lifetime experience killing and cutting up fish, chickens, deer, pigs, and entire cows. Killing and cutting up a human, no problem. She could turn two dozen freshly caught trout into dinner quicker than a modern urban person microwaves a five serving frozen lasagna. She's my closest relative likely to have killed someone and called the county sheriff-coroner to clean up the mess. Her daughter, my grandma, was even scarier. It took the police and paramedics four hours to drag her out of her home when it became clear she was a danger to herself and others. My grandma did have guns but thankfully she went old-school berserker on them, throwing things, kicking, hitting, biting and cussing. If she'd had a horse in her backyard she might have escaped. If she'd gone for her guns they would have shot her dead.

I don't like guns. Guns are a tool many fools own. A younger brother of mine has our family guns, some of them nineteenth century, because I consider myself one of those fools. If I ever had to shoot anyone it would probably be justified but I simply don't want to go there.

I am surrounded by guns every day. All my neighbors and friends have them and people are permited for CC here, but yet I have never found myself in very violent and uncomfortable places.
The closest I have ever come to it was in war and when my father was killed by a handgun.

I could do a walking tour of our neighborhood and point out the places where foolish kids have shot other foolish kids or innocent bystanders. Some of these places have little memorials built and decorated by friends and families of the victims. Our city is in the top 1% across the USA for violent crime, most of it gang vs. gang. It's not so bad if you're not a gangster, any violence is just random shit. In some places you could be hit by lightning or a tornado. It ain't Kansas.

One of my kid's friends, when he was three years old, saw his dad shot and killed when he answered the door in a gang deal gone bad. His adoptive parents moved him to a safer city when the gangs started courting him as a teenager.

We had a next door neighbor who's son had been killed in a drug deal gone bad. The poor man was an alcoholic who'd stand in his backyard watering his roses wearing an open bathrobe. If he had to pee, he'd just pee. I'd try not to look over the fence.

We now live on a hill overlooking the city. When I leave the window open at night I hear gunshots and sirens. One of our dogs howls like a coyote when she hears gunshots and sirens. I can't sleep through it.

The gangs steal guns from homes when the owners are away and sometimes directly from concealed carry cowboys who are then too embarrassed to call the police. I saw this happen once, on the sidewalk tables of a coffee place. I reported it on the anonymous tip hotline because the armed guys who stole cc cowboy's gun had noticed me noticing.

No, I don't like it. If I was some kind of superhero I'd melt all the guns.

Seems like there is some massive faux pas by a Denny's on a regular basis. To the best of my recollection, I don't remember reading shit like this about IHOP or Waffle House. Makes me wonder if there isn't something about Denny's corporate culture that attracts kooks.
