Gun Raffle At HS Wrestling Tournament (Idaho)

NAMPA, Idaho - Wrestlers vied for top honors at the Idaho Center Saturday. But in the entry a unique fundraiser was raising some eyebrows.

The Columbia High School wrestling team was raffling off "52 guns in 52 minutes".

At 52 bucks a ticket, this fundraiser has been a big money maker for the wrestling team. And it's only their first year doing the raffle. A ticket bought you 52 tries to get a gift certificate for a gun. The guns were valued up to 23 hundred dollars.

Parents we talked to at the tournament were supportive of the idea.

assaulted, raped, bashed, or robbed. But all of that in no way interacts with New Town

BTW, what are you doing to lower the number of incidents?

other than things like rifle team (normally air rifles) and drill teams (normally fakes)?

Spare us the false euphemisms and talking points...its wearisome and contributes nothing.

If this is like any raffle I have seen, there will be FFL based transfer off site.

It is a rural state, lots of big game, lots of hunting and fishing. The kids still brought their shotguns to school to go hunting after football practice. This has absolutely nothing to do with the mass murder of children in an urban New England town. I am actually pro gun control, but I cannot stand the misrepresentation of the facts here on DU. Too Fox-ish for my tastes,.

9. Yes, I'm quite sure no one in rural Idaho has heard about Sandy Hook.

Shall we organize a campaign to inform them?

10. So no one can ever go hunting again because of Sandy Hook?

All gun raffles are a direct slap in the face to those children. Buying a box of shells is pissing on their graves... So sorry that you are too myopic to see that in this extremely large country, there are vast cultural differences.

I lived in Alaska for a decade too, as does some of my family. I will be sure to tell them that they should not be armed when backpacking or fishing because Robb says it is a sacrilege to the children of Sandy Hook.

11. It's kind of like how observant Catholics eschew meat on Fridays, or give things up during Lent

They believe that making a personal sacrifice of something that you like somehow, through the spiritual realm in which things cannot be directly measured or even observed, can help someone else somewhere else.

You are confusing it with their practice of praying for the souls of Purgatory. We do not need inaccurate platitudes to point out the misinformation flying around this joint, please. There is enough out there already.

You really can't hurt them any more.

But you've got it, no one should have a gun raffle at a school, ever again. It's every bit as passive-aggressive as a purple heart band-aid.

When they do, we should point out how fucking tasteless and insensitive it is.

Guns = Slandering John Kerry's purple heart. Dude, that whole "Butterfly" effect thing was just an old theory resurrected for an over hyped movie, delivered by a pretty much B-rated actor.

The selling of raffle tickets for guns in rural Idaho has absolutely nothing, anything, never did, never will, to do with Sandy Hook.
