Our animals feed our souls. They give us ongoing companionship, amusement, not many demands, and unconditional love. My only regret is that we can only handle four cats, one dog, and one overly-large goldfish. If I had room, I'd want to adopt a whole pound-full.

And I personally do the animal maintenance about 99% of the time. Whether it's feeding the "peaceable kingdom" - as we call it around casa de calimary, or cleaning the goldfish tank, or the cat boxes (we need to keep at least two going all the time for all those kitties), or picking up after the dog and taking her out multiple times a day to do her thing (and yes, she's fairly needy, and I don't even care!), or dog park, walking, training, keeping all the supplies sufficiently stocked, or cleaning up the hairballs, I STILL don't regard that as being all that demanding.

They are ALL rescues from local shelters, and both my husband and I agree that we'd absolutely have more than just these if we had room and enough time. I also manage my son's band, btw, and the demands thereof COLOSSALLY outweigh anything any of the quadrupeds needs.

Want proof? I can offer plenty. As a matter of fact, I just did. If you choose not to believe me, that's your problem, not mine.

Even when they ARE demanding (and sometimes they are, as Goldie our dog is), they're not demanding. It's neat, and comforting, and self-affirming, to have other life forms around the house. It's neat and comforting and healing and emotionally replenishing to live with them and deal with them and communicate with them. Our animals are SO important to our lives and our well-being. In many ways they make life worth living.

Glad you're here.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Cat people now have our own example of extreme pet loyalty/devotion and no longer have to be jealous of dog owners (in just this one regard; our pets are otherwise perfect, of course).

Greyfriar's Bobby

http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofScotland/Greyfriars-Bobby/

"In 1850 a gardener called John Gray, together with his wife Jess and son John, arrived in Edinburgh. Unable to find work as a gardener he avoided the workhouse by joining the Edinburgh Police Force as a night watchman.
To keep him company through the long winter nights John took on a partner, a diminutive Skye Terrier, his ‘watchdog’ called Bobby. Together John and Bobby became a familiar sight trudging through the old cobbled streets of Edinburgh. Through thick and thin, winter and summer, they were faithful friends."

She was in love with my Grandpa we are all convinced. When he died she stopped eating and looked up at his window where he would throw food out for her. She died right after him.

My mother's burmese cats cry when she isn't home. My dad is at a loss to comfort them at times. My own orange tabby follows me everywhere. I adore cats. This kitty sounds so loyal and loving.
