(7,018 posts)name, so that the masses still think they are "voting Republican." They haven't the faintest
idea that a coup had taken place in the Republican Party beginning some 40 years ago, and
the present right-wing leaders want to keep it that way. Keep them ignorant.

(297,128 posts)from Florida, Patrick Murphy, who used to be a republicon until he realized what his party had turned into. He got into the race because he was disgusted by Allen West.
After a close vote, the state of Florida certified a Murphy victory over West, days after the election. The West campaign contested that there were errors in the vote counting process and took legal action to request a recount of disputed votes. On November 20, 2012, the West campaign conceded the election to Murphy.
Political positions Murphy became a Democrat in 2011. He says he switched from being a Republican and a Mitt Romney supporter because of his disgust with the Tea Party movement. He has been described as a "pro-choice, pro-LGBT rights but 'not ultra-liberal' Democrat who values fiscal responsibility." He supports the Affordable Care Act and Medicare. He favors income tax increases for the wealthy, but implemented on those earning over $1 million annually instead of $250,000, as advocated by President Barack Obama.

(11,012 posts)Welcome to DU.
Extremes?! Okay, Teddy Roosevelt was for conservationism and did fight against the Robber Barons in anti-Trust isuses and such, and Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, but would not have gone to war to get rid of it had the South not forced his hand. So maybe you could say they were not necessarily in step with their party in their day, but I wouldn't call them extreme left by any means.
And Eisenhower was extreme left? Only by today's standards. In his times, he was a moderate...

(29,047 posts)Lincoln is probably the most beloved Republican in American history. He is an extremely good example of a Republican.
However, John Boehner is Speaker, and Sarah Palin was the VP candidate just two elections ago, so I don't think they can be considered extremes in their party.
A current example of a current, extreme elected Republican would probably be Ron Paul.

(12,287 posts)Many absolutely hate Lincoln and they hate just about everything that Teddy stood for. As far as Eisenhower, I think he isn't even in their memories.
