Aided and abetted by the corrupt MSM and talk radio. They play up their susceptible viewers'/listeners' paranoia what the illegitimate Kenyan "other" will do to their American way of life.

The enlightening thing is seeing how many people are cracking under their facades.

the uptick in troll behavior, in all aspects of life, is beginning to hit the radar even for the average person. The simple fact is that the GOP CANNOT STAND IT that our POTUS won a second term! It is killing them! So their brain-dead followers are doing what a lot of us knew they would - shit all over themselves and then cry 'the sky is falling'!

This is what happens when very stupid and sometimes dangerous people start to lose their facade of normalcy over to reality and the facts at large.

Expect more of it, not less.

when times are bad they believe they are in a mainstream of shared misery and feel free to voice whatever nonsense comes to mind. Life is not meeting their expectations and rather than look inside to identify the problem, they lash out at those they perceive as threats.
Their inability to face reality amplifies the craziness.

I think the bigger part are the demagogues who have used conspiracy and fear mongering to fuel distrust.

"Life is not meeting their expectations..."

They've been lied to.

I mean, when Fox Noise is mainstream, that's scary enough.

it's just the... noisiest.

I agree the demagogues add to the problem, but we've always had demagogues in a wide variety of stripes. Father Coughlin, Joe McCarthy, Carrie Nation to name just a few. I think we feed into their nonsense every time we react to it and I believe that's true whether it's Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Orly Taitz or the kooks you linked to. Even the trolls who come to DU to post crap. You can't change people's beliefs and certainly not with factual evidence. Every time John Stewart attacks Fox Noise they report it as a badge of honor, that is particularly true of O'Reilly. Limbaugh does much the same. Think how much less the bloviator would have to say if no one from the left ever mentioned his name?

My New Year's Resolution is that I will be ignoring any post that smacks of having been written by a troll. I am no longer willing to give them the attention they so desire by playing into their delusions. My intention was validated by a DU thread that appeared on one of the more popular RW sites, to the consternation of many.

Where is it coming from? Alex Jones is crazy sure, but who's giving him a national spotlight? CNN. James Tracy is less crazy perhaps, but insofar as he's hinting that Sandy Hook can be traced to Obama, if he actually is, a) yes that is crazy, whereas b) there are several important questions about Sandy Hook that are being neglected by the media in favor of the crazy circus, that's not so crazy.

And there are plenty of suckers who will fall for this, from uber-liberals - only-real-progressives, to the CTers and troll who infest the net with fear and doomsday.

They play it from both sides and are gearing up to treat Obama and Democrats the same way they did from 2009, sowing division and telling people nothing they do is going to help. They have created a block here at DU who already have said they will not vote in 2014 due to whatever contrived outrage is posted here even if it is debunked repeatedly.

We can't forget who owns the media and will keep on promoting this until 2014. It worked once before and it can work again. This is going to get a lot worse.

and easy to understand.

Plus the world is moving fast, and changing an' stuff, and noooooo those people don't like that.

Authoritarians want deeply to be in control of what other people do; but the other people are like "yeah, whatev" and then the Authoritarians get mad and then they start to think...

... wait, if I can't control other people, then maybe no one really controls anything-

and then they start to freak out so they need to construct this batshit paranoid reality where everything is micro managed, because thinking a spooky boogeyman is hiding behind the curtain is, fundamentally, more reasurring than the truth that there's NO ONE there.

Also, these assholes were doing the same thing during Clinton: It was all "MILITIA! FIGHT THE GOVERNMENT! REVOLUTION!" And then Bush came into power and it was "SALUTE THE FUCKING FLAG, HIPPIE! RESPECT! THE! USA!"

...and now Obama's in so it's "MILITIA! FIGHT THE GOVERNMENT! REVOLUUUUUTION!!!!"

propels some of it, combined with disastrous declines in critical thinking skills and fundamental logic.

Your wages have not kept up your standard of living, you may have lost your house or job and you may be having to work two jobs just to make ends meet. Rather than blame a system that has allowed 1% of the population to control 40% of the wealth, it's far easier to look for malign forces that personify one's personal prejudices but that no amount of evidence can actually disprove.

But it's an excellent question you raise.

As for the "sense among the populace that nothing fundamental has really changed" comment, how did you draw that conclusion? The wealthy just got taxed more (with more to come and hopefully a revamp of tax code which Obama wants) and improved gun control laws are on the horizon. Were you expecting fundamental changes before the inauguration?
