"Frontline" examines the face of "education reform" and the cheating she refused to investigate in Washington
BY ALEX PAREENE
Michelle Rhee is the subject of tonights Frontline on PBS. Considering that Rhee, the former head of Washington, D.C.s schools, is one of the most deified figures in contemporary American politics, youd be forgiven for predicting another gauzy follow-up to Waiting for Superman, the pro-education reform propaganda picture that made Rhee a national figure. But this interview with the episodes lead reporter, John Merrow (via Dana Goldstein), suggests a much more critical take than Rhee is used to. Because unlike so many other outlets, Frontline is going to report on all the cheating.
3. Do you think the documentary will change anyones opinion of Rhee?
I dont think people know how strongly she resisted the investigation of the erasures. That might give some people pause. In Atlanta, the lead investigator told me that they considered three or more standard deviations from the norm to be a strong indication that cheating took place. In the district, there were classrooms that were five, six, seven deviations from the norm. Thats staggering. This is of course the evidence that was presented to Michelle Rhee.
The question, then, is whether any of this will change Rhees relationship with the press as a whole. Education reform, an unfortunately loaded term, is one of those things, like deficit reduction, that is considered so self-evidently right and good that its pretty much OK for objective mainstream political press types to support it, and Rhee, as the most visible face of the movement, and its most prominent martyr (she was ousted in Washington by the special interests, which in this case means the actual voting parents of Washington, D.C.), is rarely subject to hostile questioning on TV or in other press appearances. When StudentsFirst, her education reform advocacy and lobbying group, released its report cards grading each states school systems based on how many of Rhees policies the state had agreed to adopt, news organizations across the country reported on the findings as if they came from an objective think tank and not an ideological group pushing a set of controversial policies. (According to StudentsFirst, Republican-controlled Louisiana has the most pro-student laws in the nation, while many states with actually high-performing schools end up near the bottom of the rankings because they coddle their teachers a bit too much.) The line on the top of the Orlando Sentinel blog post is illuminating: Update: Criticism from American Federal of Teachers added to post. Edited to add on the other hand, in other words.

(525 posts)It's time that the hypocritical, lying so-called educator is exposed for the fake that she is.

(40,416 posts)She is a true believer of teachers are the only problem. As a former teacher, I despise this woman. She is the poster child of what is wrong with the education system in this country.
If only she could have been humiliated when she lost her job in DC like she had done to so many dedicated professionals.

(38,958 posts)She would have to improve by several magnitudes to reach the level of despicable. I heard her speak once here at the St. Louis Speaker Series and just appalled by her placing the blame for everything on teachers and their unions.

(9,893 posts)When Rhee fired the existing teachers and retained the new hires, she said that the teachers she had fired had been inappropriate with students, i.e., child molesters.
What kind of person would say such things.
Rhee is just as much a sociopath as Mitt Rmoney or any top corporate hench person.
She is unbelievably self-confident (or should I write narcissistic), and seemingly has no human feelings.
No one like that has any business in a school situation.

(96,793 posts)They did show when she fired a principal on video. That was just gross. I had never seen that but I had heard about it. I hope that principal sued her.
It was also telling to hear her talk about her mother being concerned that she didn't care what people thought about her. And she laughed.
She also appears to lack empathy. Not a good sign.
Then I was glad to see them describe the alleged test fraud in detail. You don't need to be a statistics expert to see exactly what those principals did and why they did it.

(619 posts)Ironically, it ended with a wistful admission from her, "I lost the position I loved," adding that she would loved to have stayed in DC a lot longer.

(5,442 posts)My impression was that she's unqualified, hides her utter narcissism by saying her cruelty and mendacity is "for the children," is very out of touch with how you educate children. It appeared to me in the scene where she fired the principal was that she was playing to and dressed for the camera, and by implication took great pleasure in humiliating that person. She is by no stretch an educator and does not deserve a place in the national dialogue.
