THE PROBLEM WITH JOURNAMALISM (Charles P. Pierce)

This summarizes very well the problem with media and media sources.

I like The Hill. Its reporting is generally solid and serious, particularly in comparison to Tiger Beat On The Potomac, which apparently is chucking folks overboard, and not, this time, because they told the truth in public about Willard Romney. But, unfortunately, the lead story in The Hill this morning is all my balls, thank you. It begins right with the headline.
McConnell To Take Entitlement Talks Lead, Boehner In Back Seat

Frankly, I don't care if Boehner's in the trunk, but that's not the point. The point is — what are these "entitlement talks" of which you speak? I am not aware that the administration has agreed to "entitlement talks" with the minority leader of the United States Senate. Let The Hill explain.

Lawmakers see the passage of a bill to extend most of the Bush-era income tax rates and settle the question of estate, capital gains and dividend tax rates as a template for how to move the next installment of deficit reduction. That would mean moving bipartisan legislation first in the Senate and put McConnell, the senior senator from Kentucky, in the driver's seat.

Oh, they do, do they? Anybody talk to the president about this? I think the problem with this story may be with its sourcing.
Here, in order, are the people The Hill got to comment about its perception of the growing power of Mitch McConnell, bipartisan broker of deals and leader of men.
1) Former Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.).

2) "Senior Republican aides."

3) "A House GOP leadership aide."

4) A congressional scholar named Stephen S. Smith.

5) "A Senate Republican aide."

6) McConnell himself, on TV last Sunday.

Did they lose Harry Reid's number or what?
