The Lost in Space robot (well, his voice, anyway) is dead.

Is Grovelbot in mourning?

Dick Tufeld, who voiced The Robot in the TV series Lost in Space, died on Sunday aged 85, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He passed away peacefully in a hospital in Los Angeles, according to reports.
'Everything just caught up to him,' his Space co-star Bill Mumy said. 'He lost his wife a few years ago and lost his pep after that.'

So sorry to hear this. Didn't realize that he was still around and I guess I never really focused on the actor who did the voiceover of Robot - just accepted that the character was one of an ensemble. Haven't watched the show in decades but still remember it fondly.

R.I.P. sir. You propelled that character into the American popular culture.

He did a ton of voice work over the decades outside of his Robot role. I particularly remember him as the "voice of Disney" in the '60s and '70s. He had a way of making movies like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and the Million Dollar Duck seem a lot more fun and exciting in the commercials than they actually turned out to be.

When the Lost in Space big-screen movie came out in 1998, I was so happy when Gary Oldman's Dr. Smith character switched the Robot on and out came that familiar authoritative baritone (this time in glorious THX!). "Destroy Robinson family! Destroy Jupiter 2!" I probably would have walked out if it had been someone else's voice.

I have his "Danger, Will Robinson!" on my cell phone as a reminder for meetings I don't particularly want to go to. So yeah, I guess you could say I'm a fan. Goodbye, Mr. Tufeld. Thanks for all the memories.
