Stop the slaughter of wolves

By Virginia Fuller | JANUARY 11, 2013

The delisting of the wolf in many states more than a year ago has resulted in 872 deaths and a threat to wildlife management, warns Virginia Fuller, former president of New England Wildlife Center.

<snip>

Up against the lust to kill, this caveat counts for nothing. In the most recent hunt, 872 wolves were killed: 121 in Idaho; 102 in Montana 102; 43 in Wyoming; 26 in Predator Zone; 117 in Wisconsin; and 407 in Minnesota. And the hunting season still continues in Idaho and Montana.

Beyond those stark figures are more disturbing facts. One is the imbalance between the importance of the wolf in its role as predator and the power of the rancher who grazes his herds on the public’s land. In Washington State, a particularly upsetting event occurred. Despite the fact that ranchers are compensated by the state for apparent wolf predation, nevertheless two members of the Wedge pack, first to arrive in the area since wolves were eradicated decades ago, were gunned down after reportedly preying on cattle.

Wolf season closes with more than 400 wolves killed

Hunters had registered 405 wolves by Thursday afternoon. Department of Natural Resources officials aren’t concerned that the target quota was exceeded.

Montana FWP proposes expansion of wolf hunting, trapping

HELENA — State wildlife officials planned to ask lawmakers Thursday to make it easier to hunt and trap wolves in Montana, while a Bozeman legislator wants to cap the state’s population of the predators at 250.

The House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee was to take up both proposals as the wolf debate takes the spotlight in the first week of the 2013 legislative session.

Ranchers and hunters have called for an expansion of hunting and more liberal rules after 166 wolves were killed out of the 220-animal quota set for 2011, the state’s second-ever wolf hunt. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials responded by making the 2012 season longer, eliminating most quotas and allowing trapping for the first time.

Many of us in these states are pretty upset about this problem. A couple packs I was thrilled to watch and track over the years have been killed, some by my neighbors... it's not a pleasant thing to live with out here.

for years. I had hoped when Pres. Obama was elected that I would no longer have to make the phone calls and write the letters. It has been a huge disappointment for me and I am appalled at this slaughter after all the work to reintroduce them to the wild. It makes me ill.

They will never understand or believe that wolves are good. They all think that the wolves will kill their cattle and worse, their kids and other people. I even heard one guy say he wanted to hunt the wolves because he was a hunting guide and the wolves were making the deer herds harder to find (not that they we killing too many deer, just returning the deer to their natural habits and making him work harder). I have had more arguments than I can remember with those kinds of people and it just never ends. What did my brethren ever do to them? We did nothing, and yet we are always the big bad wolf that eats grandma. It is so infused in human culture. 'Feed them to the wolves', 'wolf is sheep's clothes', 'DOn't wolf down your food' and on and on. I have embarrassed family members as I correct or ask people that we are talking with why they keep saying those bad things about wolves. I usually get a quick 'sorry, I never thought about it before' but there are times that the person just looks at me funny and starts in on wolves are evil and have been killing humans since before recorded time.

Sorry, I'm rambling now.

I pray that those killed will meet up with their ancestors across the BriFrost, where they can join the Wild Hunt. May Odin help guide them on their way. I also ask that Odin's wolves, Geri and Freki, haunt the dreams of those humans that hunt the wolves of Midgard.

Crying for Wolves: Memorial Set for Animals Killed During Statewide Hunt

The Alliance for Animals will be holding a memorial for the 117 wolves killed during Wisconsin's first hunt in fall.

By Lyssa Beyer | January 9, 2013

The Alliance for Animals will be holding a memorial for the 117 wolves killed during Wisconsin's first hunt in fall.

Deanna Devaul, an "active" member of the Alliance for Animals, is organizing the event, according to the organization's website. The event will take place at 4:30 p.m. Friday in front of the State Natural Resources building in Madison, and will include candles, bell ringing and a poem for the wolves.

"I know that I am not alone in wanting to honor the 117 wolves who were killed in the Wisconsin hunt this year," Devaul wrote on a Facebook page created to publicize the event. "It is our intention to symbolize the wolves' lives and deaths at this memorial."

There's a lot of money and a lot of bullshit being spread around, and my impression is that it's the hunting lobby. Gun manufacturers, sporting goods stores, hunting magazines, advertisers, guides: there's a lot of money on play.

Leaving the wolves just takes away elk hunting money, because they become harder to hunt. Delisting the wolves not only keeps the elk hunting money, but starts a whole new wolf hunting cottage industry. Follow the money; it's totally fucking sick.

and other important organizations who work tirelessly to help wolves gain respect and protection-and these are just a few of many:

In the Great Lakes (Ely, MN)... The International Wolf Center; a great educational facility and one of the first to exist

http://www.wolf.org/wolves/

A consortium of wolf/wildlife oriented organizations who provide education and work on policy issues:

http://westernwolves.org/

A great organization in SW MT that has lots of pertinent info on research and policy:

http://wolfwatcher.org/

A blog where a lot of information in general is presented and discussed regarding wolves and other wildlife worldwide (but based in Idaho):

http://www.thewildlifenews.com/

I urge everyone to pass these links on and to visit them and participate and learn... and you can donate to them too if so inclined. The more who know about these problems, the more voices there are to speak with to power. You'd be amazed at the notable individuals who participate in these organizations, like everyone you've ever heard of who does anything about wildlife concerns. Thanks.

Calling all Idaho Residents: This Wednesday the Idaho Department of Fish and Game Commission will hold a public hearing to discuss a measure to allocate $50,000 for the trapping, killing and aerial gunning of Idaho wolves.

Idaho officials need to know that Idaho residents believe that the increased killing of wolves needs to stop!

Defenders of Wildlife has planned a private reception before the public meeting. During the reception you will discuss the current state of wolf conservation in Idaho and you have the chance to meet other wolf supporters. Coffee and tea will be provided. After the reception, you will head over to the IDFG commission's public hearing to express support for responsible wolf conservation. Wolfwatcher's Idaho representative, Rick Neault will be attending...
