Whoops> Fla. teen who bought gun illegally accidentally shot off his penis and testicle. Got regret

A teenager is recovering after police say he shot himself in the penis and testicle while cleaning a gun he just bought…. Smeriglio told police he bought the gun last month at a party.

In light of all the gun talk these days, it seems appropriate to point out how very badly things can go when a firearm falls into the wrong hands.

It is tragical. Not as tragical as if he'd killed himself, or worse, someone else, but those of us who want gun control want it because we're sick and tired of people getting hurt and killed by guns, no matter how it happens.

And the jokes about his privates are in vety bad taste, I think. That kind of injury will have much more far-reaching consequences than if he'd shot off some of his fingers, for example.

I just asked the kids and they said "Anime character on Bleach?" so I typed that ...!!!! Then I googled and up came the pic.

Katashi Ishizuka + Ogami Ittō or something.

If it bothers you that much, sorry. Just seemed over the top and random to me. Nicknames aren't exactly like tattoos. I'd be just as perplexed if someone tried to randomly educate you on bonobos for your nickname or something.

It sounded a bit like Japanese, but not quite right. I wasn't sure if the poster was trying to say a word in Japanese or not. It could have been a learning opportunity that someone actually interested in Japanese might seize on in order to not appear foolish.

if he was really cleaning it, or stuffing it in his waistband 'gangsta' style, trying to be a tough guy. The original article said that he first lied to police, saying someone on the street had shot him. So I am kinda suspicious of the cleaning story.

For those of you who aren't familiar with semi-automatics I'd like to point out that this is an all-too-common--and tragic--firearm error.

Here's how it can happen: A novice gun owner loads a magazine full of rounds into the gun, shoots off a couple of rounds--or simply chambers a round by working the action of the firearm, loading a round into the chamber--and then decides to remove the magazine.

Since the novice and/or untrained gun owner "knows" he has just removed all the bullets from the firearm, he may then decide it's safe to handle, point the gun somewhere he shouldn't and pull the trigger. BLAM!!! He's forgotten about that unseen bullet still sitting in the chamber ready to be fired out the barrel of his gun.

PS. I learned how to handle firearms in the Marine Corps. The M-16A1 assault rifle and .45 Colt automatic were standard-issue at the time I was serving. Both weapons can hold a bullet in the chamber, ready to be fired, once the magazine has been removed.

Michigan man shoots himself through the penis while adjusting gun

A Michigan man is recovering after shooting himself through the crotch while adjusting his .40-caliber Glock, reports The Detroit Free Press.

According to police in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham, it could have been worse.

“You think about it — your femoral artery runs down there,” Deputy Chief Mark Clemence said. “He could have shot it off. It could have been a lot worse. It’s a big bullet; you’re not talking a small bullet.”

The victim was starting a job with his an air-conditioning company when the incident ocurred. He was taken to a nearby hospital and, according to WDIV-TV, underwent surgery.

But there still might be injury to add to the insult: though the man does have a permit to carry the gun, Clemence said local prosecutors will decide whether to charge the man with reckless discharge of a firearm.

all the talk about gun-safety and education and responsible ownership doesn't fairly or fully address the fact that guns are too plentiful and easy to get, with the predictable result that a lot people accidentally shoot themselves and others.
