It's clever, of course, but it's also clever nonsense.

If you can get it into their lungs.

The point how efficient is method of delivery of the lethal effect? If someone bursts into your house with a gun are you really going to defend yourself with a knife? The odds are you will end up dead. In that situation the knife is no more effective than that 1/2 cup of water.

I don't own a gun and I never want to own a gun. But I'm not stupid enough to believe that a knife has the same effectiveness as a gun. Even a one-shot-at-a-time gun. So I would never arm myself with a knife and tell myself I was safe against a gun. I favor pure defense. Hardened doors and windows, and safe place to run and hide.

The so-called equivalency is false, so the argument is flawed.

"The so-called equivalency is false, so the argument is flawed."

Yes. Of course.

The point is to point out the absurdity in that argument, which many (including those right here on DU) revere as gospel.

One presumes, the need to further restrict and control firearms proceeds from a public safety or public health standpoint. At which point relative death rates are pertinent, and 'you can defend yourself with a hammer' is not.

Her argument is just as big a fallacy as the OP. It is possible to come to the right conclusion by way of faulty logic. I'm pointing out that the logic is faulty. I agree with the conclusion. But let's arrive at that conclusion by legitimate means, not by clever-sounding nonsense.

He didn't manage to kill anybody! If only he'd had access to a gun, he could have been much more effective!
