Aborted human fetuses in food??

Every time you think Republicans can't get any crazier, they get crazier.

A Republican state senator from Oklahoma City introduced a bill Tuesday that would ban the use of aborted human fetuses in food, despite conceding that he’s unaware of any company using such a practice.

Freshman Sen. Ralph Shortey said his own Internet research led him to believe such a ban is necessary and prompted him to offer the bill aimed at raising “public awareness” and giving an “ultimatum to companies” that might consider such a policy.

and then here.

My comment was that at first I thought it was The Onion but no it is Oklahoma. I can say that because I am in Kansas and I am often confused if what I read in the paper here is The Onion or the legislature.

It just gets stranger and stranger out here. Where is the bottom of the crazy and aren't we getting pretty close to it yet?

The origin of this is the fact that some food companies use stem cell lines to test their products to make sure they're safe for human consumption. Some of them use "grandfathered" stem cell lines, generated from embryonic stem cells prior to the ban.

Now the little bits of bullshit are as follows.

"They're in our food!" - Only if you're prone to licking cell cultures and mysterious microscope slides, chief. These cells to not ever touch any packaged (or even prepared) product. They exist in labs far separate from the production facilities, and truth be told, they never even touch actual food - rather they are subject to testing with the chemical components of some foods (preservatives, colorings, etc)

"They're from abortions!" - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh god, the sad thing is people would actually believe this. No, not in the least. The original cell lines were harvested from lab fertilizations. And after what, ten years, I think it's safe to say that there is not a single stem cell culture anywhere in the US that is directly gathered from such a source; they are cultured from earlier liens of stem cells, which are generated from earlier lines, etc, etc.

"But it came from a baby!" - Not at all. Even calling them "embryonic" is stretching; calling their origins a "fetus" is ludicrous. These cells were harvested from fertilized eggs, usually in the blastocyte stage, possibly even into the early embryonic stage. In an actual uterus, it could still be weeks before fertilized eggs in this stage would implant. This is just more proof that the right does not - and possibly cannot fathom science.
