Eric Sharp: Aim for gun laws that will work
As an outdoors writer for two newspapers for 35 years, a hunter for more than 50, and an owner of handguns, shotguns and rifles, I'm at loggerheads with some gun owners because I believe the U.S. is in desperate need of new gun control laws.

I'm also at odds with many people who espouse more gun control, because I see no point in passing laws that make the ignorant feel safer yet do nothing to avert future horrors like the massacre of 20 children and six teachers at a Connecticut grade school.

A good example of our tendency to concentrate on the irrelevant can be seen across media outlets as they covered the shooting.

They wring their editorial hands over "assault rifles" when only a tiny fraction of mass murders, or any murders, are committed with those guns. The great majority of victims are killed by handguns.
