(25,699 posts)It's the SCALE of the thing.
Now, my job is a chef. I cook for the residents at a nursing home. I bust my hump eight to ten hours a day to prepare good food for these men and women, keep everything clean, and ensure everything is high quality. This year I made twenty-one grand from my work.
Mitt Romney makes this amount in eight hours and thirty minutes.
Now here's the question. What is Mitt Romney doing in one workday that equals an entire year of my labor to ensure people's grandparents eat nutritious and tasty food?
You do not make that kind of money by actually working. You just don't, there is no form of labor that earns you $2,600 an hour. Well, I amend that, there is one form of labor that has that kind of potential hourly return; it's called robbery.
I bear no animus for someone who is wealthy. However I'm also not going to pretend that Mitt Romney and those like him came by that level of wealth through fair and honest means and hard work. It's an exposure of the fact that people liek Romney are the beneficiaries of a system that rewards - even creates - fraud and theft.

(15,001 posts)and plenty of other sport and entertainment workers make substantially more than Romney. Are you saying that none of those people work? That all they do is commit fraud and theft?

(25,699 posts)It simply strikes me as something being seriously askew here, when this sort of money flies around like nothing. The initial instinct is to hold the notion that SOMEONE is getting screwed

You obviously don't understand how Mitt Romney even makes his money.
Mitt Romney worked throughout the 90's, paid the 39% tax rate on his income, and then invested what he didn't need.
Now, whatever he gets in returns from those investments is taxed at 15%.
So he's paid taxes on the money once, now this is the second time.
In the mean time, the money he invested was in Muni's, helping governments finance improvements, or in businesses helping them expand and grow.
It isn't robbery, it's damn good business sense. We should spend less time bitching about the fact he earns that much money, and more time focusing on the fact that he isn't required to pay SS, Medicare, or a higher rate on those returns.

In 2010, Mitt Romney made $250,000 in 4 days 5 hours 6 minutes and 6 seconds.
That's right - in less than a typical working week, Romney would already be past the wealthy benchmark.
