Warning - turn down the sound if you are watching the events on tv.

Here's a sample of what I heard in the last 20 minutes....

Second terms are always harder.
Second terms are less successful.
He needs to do this. He needs to do that.
Blah blah blah blah....

I'm sorry - I am FIRED UP! AND READY TO GO! As our President begins his second term...

and how I wish someone would just stick a sock in the mouths of these naysayers!

On this side of the atlantic, we have BBC WORLD, who tend to be better than CNN... or other news outlets - CNN INT was all over it, as you pointed out.... About the challenges and all that... But thankfully I at least, have BBC...

Oh - dam well, Dr Who is at least a decent show, even Sheldon from Big Bang Theory approve of it - even though 8 hours of Hammons Crash courses can be somewhat annoying - it is maybe a reason Top Gear are not being aired on BBC world anymore .. Even though it is a great show, I somehow envy them, grown man been able to play around in expensive cars - having a lot of fun - and get paid for it to boot...

Well, it not much really - just the international version of BBC.... But I suspect also, that BBC have to give the audience what they "want" - and many americans is not to much happy about the facts - a great story is far better than the reality... Therefore you have 2 hours of Dr Who - and 8 hours of Hammons....

That is exactly right.....Too many here, lack the focus, concentration or the intellect to keep up with any actual news reporting.....Especially if news dares to be on opposite of "Pawn Stars" or "Swamp People"......

I am maybe to cynical - but it looks like shows like Pawn Stars and "Swamp People is more interesting than getting facts.... Of course it is funny to se how people react sometimes to difficult issues - but I think it is just evil shows, where desperate people is being used for making good ratings for bad shows - and it is a easy way to repel people to not think for them self - and maybe decide it is time to get things underway, instead of just look at a TV screen all the time.. After all even the Romans was excellent in the game of making people been fooled, by staging impressive shows on a grand scale instead of doing something with the issues of the day.. And the romans managed to do it for more than a millennium..

But then again - I have always been interested in the world around me - and trying to following things as best as I am able to do it, today you have no excuse to not get informations, as you have thousands, maybe ten of thousands of internet sites to get information from.. 20 year ago, you could be excused for not being to interesting about the world biggest issues - today you have everything you want or ever ever wanted to know- at your fingertips...

And that, for me ,is the problem....Television programming absolutely is driven by what the audience will sit through....In times gone by,news was kept separate from that...

Yeah I'm fully aware that I have a my fingertips, more information than I can ever absorb,And to large extent,I avail myself of it....

What I lament,is the lack of any real depth in what passes as TV broadcast news,in comparison to what one would expect to enjoy from an outlet such as the BBC,outside of a couple of measley hours, weeknights on PBS....

The stark difference in what is available to you and what is to us can be shown by this anology:Find an article on a printed "reputable" newspapers website, say the Chicago Tribune,on something involving national affairs,(ours)..Then go to somewhere like The London Times and find their take on the same issue.......The difference,in journalistic depth,is akin to reading a comic book as opposed to an encyclopedia.....

It is absolutely a problem, that entertainment is building up, and more or less squeeze NEWS out of the picture, I guess we have the same issue to a degree here in the Europe too - but then again we also have national broadcasting services, who is licensed to operate, as long as they also have something news in it... A hour there, 30 minutes a couple of times - and if anything interesting happening, they have to break in, to inform of the latest thing who is happeing... And if anything happened - the whole schedule it pulled aside and they are going 24/7 to the news are not news anymore... In some cases, even in more channels than one... So you will get information one way or another, if you don't switch to another channel who is more commercial then...

Internet is an amazing tool, if you want to use it that way - it is somehow difficult to get the "right" information, but you will always get a lot of information, if you just want it.. I have for one the ugly habit on ending up discovering things that I never had a clue about when I go into the deep end of the Internet

Your newspapers was once one of the finest in the world - and something that many in Europe admired for their deep knowledge about the world, but something happened, I am not sure what - but the "news" part of the newspaper kind of disappeared and was more and more like the old soviet Pravda.. Specially when "W" got into office, whatever critical thinking was in the US newspapers kind of disappeared and was released by a propaganda machine everyone with half a brain should have been able to counter pretty easy... But No, many americans managed to take the bite, and still believe to this day, that Iraq and Saddam Hussein was the kingpin around 11 sept 2001... Even if the evidences against it was staggering, even before the Iraq war started.... It was a lot of "if"s and "unsure" about it - but basically even before the first armored tank was driving over the border to Iraq, the evidences against Iraq's involvement in 11 sept 2001 was slim to non... But it maybe true, that for getting information more and more americans have to get "abroad" to get the same information you should have getting back home.. I see The Guardian are used by many to get information about things in the US, who is not followed at all by the american newspapers - local or other vice.. Pretty scary if you ask me..

Today, you will get better information from "alternative sources" than from the leading news papers in the US.. I have a deeper understanding of what is happening in the US now - by being member here on DU for some years - than I had before when I was just reading the newspapers alone.. Not that I am an expert on the US anyway - just an humble foreigner who try to get a grasp on your all there over... It is not easy to do as you twist and turn 180 degrees all the time...

That was a relief for me to know, that even you who is born and raised in the US, is not an expert on the subject

It looks like it is rather easy to stay stupid in the US.. I guess some of the case is because the country is so big - so difficult to get a real grasp on - by many... Here in Europe, even the biggest nations, like Germany, France and Russia is fare more inclined to have some knowledge about the world outside of their own borders - for the smaller country's like Norway, where I'm from, it is a matter of life and death to have a knowledge about the world - at least to have a grasp on some of our bigger friends out there..

Yeah.....About that......The stupids have convinced themselves that the U.S. is the greatest country,in every conceivable category,to the extent that the world outside our borders is not relevant. Not worthy of any notice at all, unless their citizens try to come here and "steal" away pissant menial jobs that no one else will do anyway...That always gets the stupids attention....Or if somewhere has resources that can be stolen and exploited, under the guise of humanitarianism or installing democracy,of course. That always gets noticed.Otherwise, the outside world is filled with godless, insignificant savages and heathens, who don't warrant the glory of our acknowledgement.
