The Helen Woodward Animal Center said the 2-year-old poodle-Maltese mix dog named Sophie was injured after she spotted coyote in the familys backyard in East County. The dogs family said that they heard a cry and ran out to see Sophie step in front the family puppy to protect it from the coyote.
The family told the animal center than they were able to scare the coyote away, but Sophie sustained bites to the neck, shoulder and side. The puppy was unharmed.
A veterinarian stitched Sophies wounds and gave her medicine. The family then decided that their homes location near wildlife might be a threat to the dog and puppys safety, so they surrendered the animals to the Helen Woodward Animal Center last week.
The puppy, Lulu, was adopted shortly after, but now Sophie is looking for a new home.

I live in San Diego, coyotes in every canyon.
I lost my cat 2 years ago.
That is when I decided to have only Coyote-Sized pets
The cat is my daughters - when he visits Roo, Diablo NEVER goes outside!

What a wonderful, brave and loving little girl.
I can understand and agree with their safety concerns, but I would borrow the money if need-be to put up a 6" chain link puppy and small dog back yard area for my babies before I would surrender them for adoption...
