A lot of reactionary celebs seem to be has-been types...you get the feeling they join the Right, in part, because the Right is still willing to flatter them and treat like them like they're still "all that". The ones whose careers are still working tend NOT to be on that part of the political spectrum, in most cases.
Do you think it's that way with Ted?

that there IS a corellary between the decline of one's musical career and the embrace of right-wing politics.

(23,664 posts)4. Probably, but it's just as true that he wouldn't have stayed on the charts
Even if he never would have become a right wing loudmouth.
Victoria Jackson, Kelsey Grammer - a couple other has beens or never were's who have managed to cling to a tiny bit of the spotlight by becoming wing nut "celebrities".

revive his career by carving out a pro-Bush / Iraq / generally nastiness niche.

(12,151 posts)7. Does ideology harden in middle age? Or fear?
Seems like that's the pattern. Mel Gibson leaps to mind. His rep was always as a fun-loving "prankster" with religious-kooky father. Then suddenly he makes a weird religious movie and starts with the anti-Semitic conspiracy talk. So, fear.
And Ted wants his guns 'cause he's an "alpha male." Fear.
Dennis Miller went over the edge (along with a number of people, apparently) after 9/11. Fear.
Victoria Jackson passes her prime and goes from charming nitwit to babbling Ayn Randian obsessed with taxes "punishing success."
Fear. No more dangerous or debilitating emotion.
