"Home protected by Smith & Wesson" -- NOT!

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/n-m-pastor-taught-killer-son-shoot-article-1.1245610

The New Mexico pastor who was slain with his family sowed the seeds of their destruction when he taught his son how to shoot.

Fifteen-year-old Nehemiah Griego ambushed his unsuspecting dad, Greg, 51, shooting him dead with an assault rifle after killing his 40-year-old mother, Sara, and three younger siblings, police said Tuesday.

Greg Griego had taught his son how to use the AR-15 rifle and took him shooting regularly, Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston said.

Outside the family house, a security-style sign read: “Home Protected by Smith & Wesson.”

1. Looks like the "wholesome family fun with guns" -- as some in gun culture call it -- backfired. RIP.

No one's yet brought up any past behavior that would explain this.

Until some of the MENSA candidates among the gun-loving community finally figured out that the stickers might as well read "Valuable & Easily-Sellable Handguns In Glove Compartment." Same principle at work when you post an S&W sign in your front yard. What a shame that some felon didn't make off with the pastor's firearms stash before this tragic event.

I understand that's how they did it back then (training young boys how to shoot), but we're in new times. OK *maybe* you can teach kids how to shoot, but I really don't think most young boys of today are responsible or mature enough to have access to firearms. And if the weapon is in the home, they have access, even if you think they don't.

I know every now and then we hear of a teen shooting an intruder, but I think that's rare and the risks far outweigh the unlikely benefits.

Griego texted a picture of his dead mom to his 12-year-old girlfriend after the killings Friday and spent much of the next day with her, Houston said.

Prosecutors could charge her with failing to report a crime.

to go on a shooting rampage at Walmart.

I think they should leave the 12 year old alone. She probably didn't realize she had an obligation to report. That wouldn't be obvious to a child.

was that this 15 year old shooter's girlfriend was 12. 12? Do parents of a 12 year old girl really thinks it's ok for her to have a 15 year old boyfriend? At those ages the 3 years' difference in age and maturity, or lack thereof, is immense.
