It's a dialogue stopper, a device used by people who don't have a rational rebuttal to an argument or who don't understand or can't articulate their own issues.
Being offended is largely a choice, it leads to nothing productive, and the most effective communicators don't engage in that level of interaction.

I wonder if he came out with that little gem after people didn't take his comments regarding female sexuality so well. Comments he later said were all in jest... I guess he's surprised to find sexist jokes aren't quite as popular as they used to be. Boo hoo.

(30,252 posts)I can offend without being rude or juvenile - or I can at least try. The art of the insult is a long and turgid affair, but it has produced some jewels here and there.

(17,175 posts)One of the big social changes, everyone's offense being voiced at all times, and no one much caring if the feeling of offense is reasonable or not, or if the intent was to offend or not.
We have lost all sense of proportion, and thus it seems the only recourse is to validate everything.
