1. I don't know if you remember the Archie Bunker Show but they did a show on seniors

eating cat food. It's to bad we don't have shows like that any longer.

2. I actually remember an episode of "Good Times" that chronicled it too...

but saying, "someone did a show about it" is hardly proof. But with something that could be embarrassing, I am sure there is no real way to tell.

3. that was back before cat food cost more than people food

it's pretty much just a metaphore now - for seniors having to chose between esential things. it would probably be better to say "having to hose between medicine and food." sweet potatoes are cheaper than facy feast.
