Some eastern Idaho schools to get gun safes

POCATELLO, Idaho — Schools in one eastern Idaho district are being equipped with gun lockers so school resource officers can keep rifles, ammunition and evidence close at hand.

Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand told the Idaho State Journal ( http://bit.ly/SxHTxs) that the idea was adopted more than a year ago, and the gun lockers have already been purchased - it's not a reaction to the Dec. 14 deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

All of the school resource officers in the district are already armed with semi-automatic handguns, but Marchand said schools have hallways that are 50 to 100 yards long. In the event that a shooter came to the school, a trained officer could do more with a rifle than one limited to a sidearm, he said.

"Having that tool gives us another opportunity to protect students, faculty and staff," Marchand said. "I hope we never use them anywhere."

1. I've read that these can be gotten into pretty quickly.

Somehow using the oils from the last print. Anyone know? If so this would only cause a false sense of security as someone eventually is gonna forget to wipe that print and some kid will be able to access the very guns that are there to protect them.

Anyone know about ways to fool a gun safe?

It is not so much a safe as a locker. It would need a key so prints left behind will not help. A determined person with a pry bar could open it in 5 minutes.

2. The intent seems a little misguided...

...in that if a shooter has already breached the school grounds, the officer is not going to have time to run to his locked safe and get a rifle and some ammo. The only gun that will do him any good is the one he is carrying at the time of the incident.

The "safe" in the picture is really a steel cabinet.
