Received an URGENT MESSAGE from the NRA today....

on a large, bright orange postcard (husband is a member) warning us our Senators are "getting pressure from President Barack Obama and anti-gun activist New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg TO ELIMINATE OUR RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS.

(Really? Who's proposing that? No one!)

Contact information for our Senators was included with the request to tell them to OPPOSE any ban on semi-automatic rifles and magazines and OPPOSE universal background checks. Mental health reform is what they should support.

Thank you for the reminder and contact info, NRA! We e-mailed our Senators and our Congressman asking them to SUPPORT gun control measures.

It's dated January 22, 2013 and is from the NRA, Institute for Legislative Action, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030-7400. Or keep searching. It's real.

Party Identity in a Gun Cabinet

An American child grows up in a married household in the suburbs. What are the chances that his family keeps a gun in their home?

The probability is considerably higher than residents of New York and other big cities might expect: about 40 percent of married households reported having a gun in their home, according to the exit poll conducted during the 2008 presidential election.

Lets conservatively estimate that there are 50 million "married households". Lets take 40% of that - 20 million. Lets call the couple of the household "gun owners".

That's roughly 40 million people.

with static, saying 'could you please repeat that.'

hee hee.

here they are on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, sliming money with don't tread on me mugs-

"Freedom itself was attacked" read another NRA e-mail sent to members on September 10. The appropriate response according to the NRA: buy a some stuff from the NRA store to help fund the gun lobby.

The e-mail read:

American freedom remains under attack. On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, preserve your right to self defense and promote our national defense by continuing your commitment to America's foremost defender of liberty - The National Rifle Association of America.

Then they tried to unload some "Don't Tread On Me" mugs. According to the email, "100%" of profits from sales "go directly to support vital NRA programs."

now, about that MENTAL HEALTH THING-
I was on site at the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoo t fewer than 20 minutes last Saturday before I passed a shaved-head lad with with a Totenkopf death head on his chest. (The Totenkopf was the symbol of the Nazi SS division that ran death camps like Auschwitz during the Holocaust.)

The shirt looked brand new. I took that to mean the kid or whoever gave it to him bought it from one of the dozen or so permitted vendors who openly sold white supremacist merchandise. This included a wide selection of t-shirts and flags bearing symbols popular with racist skinheads and neo-Nazis. (And no, I'm not counting Confederate battle flags.) Also for sale were the race war fantasy novels Hunter and The Turner Diaries by William Pierce , founder of the National Alliance, a notorious hate group. A Friends of the NRA fundraising booth was located within sight of a stall of swastika flags.

At a long table, underneath a relic of the famous World War II rocket launcher, the two guys from Kokomo, Ind., are also selling a rapid-fire variant of lower part of the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle, a type of firepower component that was outlawed in America for a decade before then-President George W. Bush and a Republican-controlled Congress allowed the assault-weapon ban to expire in 2004. And at the front counter, it is just two dollars for this black-and-white glossy Photoshop job depicting Obama in an adolescent guise, in a plain white T-shirt, upright in a kitchen chair, while with his hands on our future president, in a soft parental pose, is the casually dressed Nazi Fuhrer.

"I've sold a stack of them -- they did a good job,
" one of the Bazooka Brothers (okay, not really brothers), Brian Kitts, says, gradually warming up to the topic. He says he doesn't know who produced the Obama-Hitler Photoshop and was vague as how exactly he came to be selling it alongside a card of the now semi-famous poster of Obama as The Joker, over the word "Socialism" -- ironically, the very same image that the finance chief of the Republican National Committee would use just six months later in a presentation on using fear to raise campaign cash.

Why does he think the Nazi comparison is valid?

Religious-Right Radicals Join NRA Side In Gun Battle

Religious-right extremists who have spent most of their energy in recent years vilifying LGBT people or fighting the nation’s culture wars on other fronts have found a new demon to slay: gun control.

It might seem odd that those who profess allegiance to the teachings of Jesus Christ would be so vociferous about making sure that Americans have continued, unfettered access to assault rifles. But in the wake of the massacre of schoolchildren in Connecticut, which ignited the most heated debate about gun control in this country in a decade, some of the religious right’s most rabid voices are joining the fight.

Matt Barber, a lawyer for the anti-gay Liberty Counsel, predicts a civil war over gun control. Bryan Fischer, the rabid mouthpiece for the homophobic American Family Association, has banned the use of the words “assault rifles” on his radio show. Even the Family Research Council, which describes itself as a pro-family organization, has targeted President Obama as “blatantly disingenuous when he says he believes in the Second Amendment.”

Organizers finally put a stop to that in the mid 1990s. I'll admit that's where I found my copy - and for those of you who haven't read it, take my word for it, it really is full of lurid anti-Semitism and yellow journalism, Goebbels-style.

What really struck me about the book was the author's take on democracy as a system, that it was nothing more than a welfare state designed to turn decent people into "herd animals" who simply follow orders as long as they have access to a few creature comforts, especially television. Supposedly, "the Order" promoted its own rough form of direct democracy, provided that you were white, preferrably male, and had been involved with their little movement since the lean years. Just don't talk smack about "the Great One" or his ideological successor, though.

or at least there USED to be...

July 9 was not the first time bonfires were lit to destroy resistance to the power of the government. Nazi "Germany's Josef Goebbels ordered all Jewish books to be burned in public in May 10, 1933. University towns were centers of Jewish Books Destruction Day." As the Völkischer Beobachter (Populist Observer) reported on May 12, 1933, "The German student body of the Berlin universities assembled yesterday for a torchlight procession on Hegel Platz. They formed up, accompanied by a truckload of 25,000 books and writings harmful to the people. The procession ended at Opera Platz where as a symbolic act, these un-German writings were set aflame on a pile of logs."

The burning of Jewish and un-German books was followed within a few years by the burning of Jews and other supposedly un-German people. Jewish Books Destruction Day helped change popular consciousness so as to pave the way for genocide. Likewise paving the way for genocide was the systematic disarmament of Jews and all other opposition elements, in Nazi German itself and in conquered territories.

How long until a U.N.-declared official day of hate is celebrated with governments actually killing people? [America Disarmed: Inside the U.N. and Obama's Scheme to Destroy the Second Amendment, Pages 106-107]

LaPierre concluded by asking, "Will the mass burning of firearms help set the stage for mass executions of gun owners?" [Page 108]
