A lot of "Revenge Porn" is not revenge

I hold a special place of contempt in my heart for men who betray sexual trust. It is like pretending to have a flat tire so you can rob anyone nice enough to top to help you.

One should be grateful for whatever trust and intimacy led to the pictures being taken in the first place, and never abuse that just because things didn't work out.

These guys are s-c-u-m.

As to the phenomenon itself, as a practical thing... most (not all, most) supposed "revenge porn" is actually guys bragging. The revenge angle provides a male-acceptable reason to be posting pictures of your dick online!

Who leaked the Pamela Anderson sex tape? Tommy Lee, of course... and because he wanted everyone to see his huge "weenis" (As Pamela called it)

A lot of stories about porn get confused because porn ads are not always true. (Shocking, I know...) The Playboy channel has a show devoted to "revenge" tapes. It is, or should be, obvious that there are no revenge tapes on the show.

How exactly do you get the age verification documentation required by Title 18 U.S.C. 2257 for a revenge tape? And I can promise that even with the woman's passport in hand, Playboy would still not show anything without a signed model release. The revenge show is fake. And 99% of online revenge porn is also fake.

In a similar trend, there are porn sites of girls who have all kinds of sex with some douchebag to make a demo tape he will send to porn producers. The gimmick is that it's a scam... there's no job. He isn't a real casting agent.

But it is fake. The girls are actually paid $2,000 to make the tape pretending to no be paid. The claim that it is a con is... a con! Some guys get off on the delusion that the girls are not being paid.

The real "revenge" problem is more about phones than web-pages. A high school or college douchebag shows pictures of a girl to his friends, who are in her social circle. That is so cruel and tragic and horrible the mind boggles.

But even then the motive will often be better described as bragging, rather than revenge per se. If the guy is enough of a douchebag to show intimate pictures to his friends for "revenge" then he's enough of a douchebag to have already shown them around before the break-up just to brag.

Some douchebags see sex as primarily something to raise their standing among guys.

There are, however, some cases where someone broadcast or diseminates intimate pictures as revenge. This is more a phone thing than an internet thing. If the douchebag wants to really hurt the girl then posting pictures of her on some porn site isn't very effective unless everyone she knows uses that porn site as if it were Facebook.

The supreme douchebag will email them to people the woman knows.

In summation:

There is some actual "revenge porn" on websites, but more typically the "revenge" angle is not real. Guys are pathetic and will post pictures of "their girlfriend" that are from last months Playboy. And "revenge" is a marketing tool to make generic amatuer sex videos more appealing to some scumbags.

On the other hand, abuse of trust regarding intimate photographs is a very real and common thing. It is so commonplace that they actually have PSAs on TV about it. There's an ad showing a girl sending a boy she likes a nude cell phone picture an then him showing it to his laughing, high-fiving buddies.

A genuine social problem. A genuine instance of guys being scum. An upsetting social trend.

But not a major commercial porn issue. It happens, of course, but postings to a website are not the heart of the problem.
