There must be easier ways to commit suicide - one more Darwin awardee

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/01/26/quebec-woman-was-cooked-to-death-at-retreat-coroner-says/
<snip>
Quebec police officers have completed their report into the bizarre death of Chantale Lavigne — who was “cooked to death” at a personal development seminar — and investigators are expected to meet with the Quebec prosecutor assigned to the case as early as next week.

It will be up to the prosecutor “to decide whether any charges will be filed, and, if so, what they would be,” Rene Verret, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, said Thursday.

The manner in which Lavigne died was “very unusual,” Verret noted.

An autopsy report on Lavigne’s body has yet to be completed, the Quebec coroner’s office said. But Radio-Canada quoted coroner Gilles Sainton as saying the 35-year-old mother of two from St. Albert, Que., “was cooked to death.”

the woman was on a retreat w/ a spiritual leader she trusted. they were in a sweat lodge. something went wrong. people were injured. this woman died. and you try to equate it with her own stupidity? with the darwin awards? you are reaching b/c you want so badly to be funny- and you clearly dont know what you're talking about here. my god, i hope that poor woman's family doesnt ever see atrocious, tasteless, crass posts like this. get a clue. have some compassion. there are plenty of truly foolish deaths to write about. there is a mn being charged for htis woman's death. she didnt decide to die you know. my god. well, karma, hon. watch for your karma after a nasty post like this one. uck. humans can be really rotten.

I never could find the humor in another person's demise, even when it was a result of poor judgement. I think we've all done something stupid once or twice that could've gotten us killed.

They were packed in mud, wrapped in plastic and covered with blankets. For 9 hours.

Shouldn't a sense of self-preservation kick in at some point?

a few of the new age types around here are in these get ups 24/7. Some have surgically modified their appearance. We mostly consider them harmless, until somebody gets cooked.

Just kidding.

I don't know why people go to these 'spiritual' sweat lodges. It's every year people die from them. They claim to "help," but are really just a bunch of bunk, and often downright dangerous.

Too soon?

Seriously though, when was this ever a good idea?

Lavigne died in hospital after she and eight others in a personal-development seminar called Dying in Consciousness were covered with mud, wrapped in plastic, put under blankets and immobilized with their heads in cardboard boxes for about nine hours, under instructions to hyperventilate.

Remind me why doctors have licenses, drugs have approval periods but this lunacy is left unregulated.

people buy in to such obviously stupid shit in the first place.

And doesn't there come a time, when you start feeling ill, that you just say "screw this craziness" in the name of survival/self-preservation?

There's nothing funny about it, but this is the sort of thing that really makes one wonder about people's common sense.
