When it comes to gun control, this is what we're up against, folks.

This letter appeared in my local paper today:

I loved the idea of folks having to get a license to keep a concealed maniac. The news has reported that the Newtown, Conn., shooter’s mother had already begun paperwork to have him committed. When housing a maniac, usually, getting to the point of actually seeking professional help only occurs after a visit or two from the local police department. That drives home the point that the problem is just too big to handle at home. I have not heard it reported whether police had been called to that home in the past or not. To those thinking more gun laws is the solution, that’s something to think on.

I hear a lot of folks saying that firearms enthusiasts don’t need automatic weapons or even semi-automatic weapons or high capacity magazines. If guns were only for hunting or target plinking, that would be true. However, our forefathers, when drafting our Constitution, guaranteed us the right to keep and bear arms. They did not qualify that with, “for hunting or target plinking.” The main reason they wanted the citizens armed, was so we’d have the means to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. Remember, they had only very recently had to do so. In order to protect ourselves, we need access to the level of weaponry we’re having to defend ourselves from. By that reasoning, law-abiding American citizens have a right to own anything in the government arsenal. With what’s transpired in Washington, D.C., over the last 50 years, it’s becoming more obvious everyday that we are once again living under a tyrannical government.

Buy guns! Teach your kids to use them! They will need to know! For those harboring unlicensed maniacs, please disregard the last three sentences.

I can hardly wait until the loonies around here start lobbying for rocket launchers and nukes to defend themselves from our tyranical government.

what separates sane responsible gun owners from gun nuts. The people I know who have a gun for home protection or hunting are generally responsible people who keep their firearms locked away from curious children and have no fear of registration or background checks. Then there are the fearful people who stockpile weapons for fear of a tyrannical government or collapse of civilization. Some call them doomers or preppers or whatever. Personally I think those people are mentally unbalanced and are the very people who should not have a gun.

I would just like to see the process of obtaining a gun weed out as many irresponsible gun owners as possible.

There are several things that could cause a rapid collapse of everything and put us back hundreds of years.

Carrington Event - Happened in 1859. Super storm on the sun. If it happens again, and is pointed at Earth, all of Earth's unshielded electronics will be destroyed.

Internet collapse - Almost happened a few years ago. A hacker could find a way to crash the whole system.

Global pandemic - Humans are not immune to the laws of biology. As numbers increase the vunerability of a species to a highly contagious, very deadly disease gets greater. Huge swaths of humanity live in extreme poverty with no hygene, making an excellent breeding ground for mutated diseases.

Nuclear War induced climate change - The Cold War is over, but there are other countries with nukes and hostile neighbors.

It isn't crazy to be prepared.

I'm saying it's insane to think one needs an arsenal to protect themselves in such a situation. Are you a prepper trying to justify such behavior?

In the event of such a large scale disaster I will be among the dead. If civilization collapses I won't be able to get my meds and will soon die, so I don't worry about it.

I do realize that there a several things that are possible that can bring about the complete collapse of modern civilization.

They are nothing but empty pieces of pipe, usually with a battery, some wires, and a switch attached. FWIW, you can make a rocket launcher with nothing more than a length of rope and two trees to tie it to.

Your nukes suggestion is silly. Lots of gun-banners like to bring up nukes and then think that they have been smart. The second amendment doesn't cover weapons of mass destruction.
