If you wonder where those GOP statistics about religion

come from, wonder no more. George Barna is almost certainly the source. The Barna Group, which is really just George Barna, is forever surveying people about religion, and has reams of statistics people can use in speeches, etc. So, if you hear someone say that 62% of college students end up leaving their church, that's where the statistic came from.

You can find out all sorts of things about Christianity in America on his site. Now, whether his stuff is accurate or not is anybody's guess, but that's where Republicans turn when they want statistics to show how the "evul librals" are destroying Christianity.
