#OccupyOakland activists march in Oakland, plan to take over building, police riot cnn.com/2012/01/28/us/… #cnn

http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/28/us/california-occupy/index.html

"Occupy Oakland is about people providing for themselves and for others, since it is clear that the system can no longer provide for them," the group said on its website. "It is a place where people who are fed up can come together and develop new forms of struggle."

In a letter to Mayor Jean Quan, the city council and the Oakland police department, protesters threatened several actions if authorities try to "evict us again." They include "blockading the airport indefinitely, occupying City Hall indefinitely, shutting down the Oakland ports" and getting help from the activist hacking group known as Anonymous.

Oakland has been a flash point of the Occupy movement since October when police used tear gas to break up demonstrators who refused to leave downtown. One demonstrator, a Marine veteran of the war in Iraq, suffered a skull fracture after being hit with a police projectile, according to a veteran's group; police said they acted after the crowd threw paint and other objects at officers.
In mid-December, Occupy protesters shut down the Oakland port terminal.

Guess only on Twitter will they call it was it is, a police riot. Not in the article for public consumption.

Nothing new from them except what goes on within prison walls.

But when I saw Don Lemon on CNN, I decided to watch. He said the smoke and police presence was from earlier today. He asked if they didn't have current footage and some with sound. They didn't have sound because they were filming from a helicopter. It wasn't a long report. but I'm hoping they go back to it.

I think that Don Lemon is fairly even handed, so I will watch him. My first reaction when I saw those lines of cops was the thought of Kent State. I missed a lot of the early Civil Rights movement, but I have seen footage and you're right. Terrible days...

But I guess I thought we were lucky to be living in better times whenever I watched any of it. Looks like we still have a long way to go.

I will turn on CNN. It looks like the occupiers are going back to try to take over another building.

I did see one report on Twitter that the filming by the media, not sure which network, stopped after the police began attacking, but did start up again.

If they are ashamed to have what they are doing be covered by the media, maybe they shouldn't be doing it. Reports also of them attacking the media also. But that was from Twitter, nothing verified yet.

But at least they showed it. I remember when CNN neglected to air any footage of the huge worldwide protests just before the Iraq war.

Apparently this afternoon's police presence in Oakland was because the protesters were attempting to occupy a building. Bad as all of this is, we do need to see what's going on. If they're also attacking the media, that explains the filming from helicopters.

I remember that too, CNN starting to cover the worldwide anti-Iraq War protests around the world, I was watching and reporting on a big blog at the time. Then they cut the coverage off.

Yes, the Occupy Oakland announced a weekend of action, including trying to take over a new location for them to occupy.

Things really seem to have gotten out of hand there and aren't getting any better. This is a national story now, dread hearing reports of more injuries - or worse.

The blackout of the anti-war protests by CNN was one of the first "actions" I took part in back in 2003. Think it was sponsored by MoveOn. That's also when I joined DU, so I've participated in countless "actions" since, not to mention working for my congressman on his last two campaigns.

After all the terrible footage we've seen of tragedies like Kent State and the 1968 Convention, not to mention Scott Olsen, it's hard to fathom how this kind of intimidation and violence is still allowed to go on...

earlier in the day. The OPD kettled them and the protesters broke free, continued on their march and were kettled again.

The OPD announced that the protesters had failed to disperse after several lawful orders to do so and that everyone was under arrest which is what is happening now.

care. They don't care about the cause #Occupy is fighting for, they don't care about the insane police response. Yeah, that's pretty much why - we're greedy and selfish and we don't care about each other - as long as we've got ours - screw everyone else. Capitalism encourages it and we all love us some c(r)apitalism here in the usa - even as things go to shit and it funnels ever more wealth upwards - we still cling to it.
