(20,600 posts)I can't stand it when it gets really cold, and can't imagine ever being in that kind of temperature. The coldest I have ever been in was around zero degrees and that was freezing cooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllddddddddddd.

(46,436 posts)tossing a cup of hot water into the air and having it immediately vaporize? It's amazing.
It's pretty chilly down here, maybe -8, but it's tolerable.

(46,436 posts)Record-breaking snow totals earlier (about twice as much as normal here in Anchorage) and now record-breaking cold, not to mention the hurricane they had out west in November. http://www.usatoday.com/weather/storms/story/2011-11-09/alaska-storm/51134540/1 The average temperature here this month has been 2.7 degrees. Normal low and high averages are 9 degrees to 22 dgrees. We're supposed to get a little break tomorrow, some more snow. !! Like 90+ inches isn't enough.
Here's a shot of Ship Creek in Anchorage earlier today.

(16,166 posts)it's at the bottom of government hill and before the climb to 4th Street, isn't it?
I got frostbite on my hands when it was 40 below and I had to change a starter on my car, I couldn't do it with gloves on.
I could not even begin to imagine 90 inches of snow though.

(46,436 posts)Do you remember how some winters the ducks would stay at the open water at the foot of that little dam? This year it's completely frozen, and there's not a duck to be seen.

(16,166 posts)my wife used to work at McCrorys on Fourth St and I remember the plug ins at the parking lots. Jeez, that was a long, long time ago.
I remember Portage Glacier actually being a glacier, some of the pics I've seen lately show it's receded quite a bit.
That is some beautiful country from Anchorage to Homer and from Anchorage to Fairbanks. What I remember of the entire place was way before new civilization hit. I understand there are homes on the side of the Chugach Mts now, I flabbergasted.

(46,436 posts)but only on the south side since the bases and Chugach State Park take up the more northerly hillsides. I personally wouldn't want to live up there because they get terrible winds -- several times this winter they've exceeded 100 mph -- and, of course, the snow is deeper up there. We're quite comfortable over here in the Turnagain/Spenard area, only about five minutes from everything.

(21,475 posts)It is 29 degrees down here and that is too damn cold...I like our normal rainy weather. We don't have to shovel it.....Most of our cars here don't even have block heaters....Don't need them.

(128,844 posts)in Philly, Alaska can keep it! I am enjoying the break, but mindful that we still have to get through February and March. .

(36,286 posts)is bottled up way up North; now I know what he was talking about. I figure we're due for at least one passing swipe. When that cold wind crosses Lake Erie and Lake Ontario (Both at record high temperatures), I expect a four foot overnight storm!

(34,179 posts)Otherwise crop production will be down. Not to mention we need some serious snow to make up for last year's drought. Uncork that bottle and share some winter with the rest of us.
