The prosecution of at least two of the defendants in the Penn State University scandal becomes significantly more difficult with Joe Paterno's death, legal experts agree.
Although the state attorney general's sexual abuse case against Jerry Sandusky is unlikely to be affected by Sunday's death of Mr. Paterno, the perjury charges against athletic director Tim Curley and senior vice president of finance Gary Schultz are another story.
Mr. Paterno's testimony before the grand jury differed from what both men said and was likely an important part of the prosecution's case.
But because the longtime football coach was never cross-examined, none of it can now be used.

(36,418 posts)Having this live time-bomb on staff for all those years - what better way to maintain discipline. It's called blackmail that simply became the way things work. Everyone gets rich, nobody goes to jail, so long as everyone keeps their traps shut. What, you think college sports is just about marching bands and cheerleaders?

(36,437 posts)So, because there have been point shaving and game fixing events in the past, your laughable suggestion that mafia point-shaving has something to do with the Penn State scandal has some kind of merit?
Like I said, both in its logic and claim, that kind of nonsense belongs in our creative speculation forum.

(36,418 posts)Okay. I can understand nobody wanting to make this sort of thing public, but why was the pedophile allowed to stay on staff for all those years?

(17,111 posts)However, I also don't make up theories out of whole cloth.
There is no way point shaving of any magnitude could have occurred without somebody finding out. If nothing else, the bookies would have screamed bloody murder if there was a consistent pattern of PSU games that didn't cover the spread. They watch the line like hawks.
In addition, the NCAA mooks may not be able to do much, but they do watch for any whiff of that kind of wrongdoing. Pedophilia may sail above their heads despite all the rumors over the years, but mess with the money and the bottom line and they are all over it!

(36,418 posts)staff? If not blackmail by the Mob, or someone else, why? If all they wanted to do was to avoid embarrassment to the school, (understandable but still illegal), why not just ease Sandusky out with a nice Golden Parachute?
No, something doesn't add up here, and I still haven't heard a plausible explanation for why he was allowed to keep his job all these years.

(17,111 posts)Sandusky didn't look like the picture of a pedophile that people imagine. A lot of people think that pedophiles can be spotted and that they look strange. In fact, most of them look like everybody else and fit right in. That's why they get away with it.
Sandusky was also friends with many people and held an important position in the football program. If you weren't very sure about accusing him, you were asking for trouble. People would jump to his defense like they did even with the horrid grand jury testimony.
Nobody saw anything overt or if they did they kept it quiet. Penn State football and Paterno held very important pride of place. Paterno had a great deal of power around the entire university, not just in the athletic department. People put their interests above that of the victims.
It is hard to believe when you think about the ugly nature of the crimes.i would have expected someone like Paterno to have acted very quickly and forcefully if he had a clue. I would think that most people would.
There was a conspiracy of silence. This could have been a tacit understanding to look the other way or maybe people were given some strong hint. I don't believe they will uncover all of the connections and lapses in judgement.
They tried to get rid of the problem by letting Sandusky go. It was quiet for a long time. However, once it got out, they had to know it was going to be a huge problem or maybe they were in denial. By not doing anything, it blew up on them.

(36,437 posts)their only real case was Mike McQueary's ludicrous and contradictory testimony.
The DA will use Paterno's death as an excuse to drop the perjury charges, but there really was no case to begin with.
