(3,266 posts)NPD is becoming epidemic. Precisely because these people don't care who they hurt, or step on, is why sooooo many of them are bosses, managers, CEO's, and politicians. Combined with utter lack of empathy is their ability to charm the habit off a nun when they perceive a personal benefit. Plus, NPD's are usually highly intelligent. All these traits work to create a ruthless fucker who handily ingratiates himself to his superiors, gleefully walks on the backs of his underlings, believes his own hype and easily convinces others of his greatness. The preponderance of these people rising to power in govt and in business is the single over-arching factor in our country's troubles. Lack of empathy.
Furthermore, these NPD's react violently and viciously when they perceive cracks in the veneer of their carefully crafted fantasy of being the most awesome person in the world. See: Newts vicious attacks on Mitt after Mitt began his attack ads. See also: the viciousness as of late in the entire Republican Party. They see their world crumbling, their carefully crafted world of rich, white, male superiority...and they're fighting like rabid cornered rats.
You saved me a lot of typing. That violent reaction has a name - narcissistic rage. Not a pretty sight.

It's one of the traits of the disorder.
I speak as the battered survivor of a long marriage to a malignant narcissist.

(12,496 posts)I've already accepted the job of ruler of the world, so Newt is out in left field where he belongs.
As Ruler, I will remake this world into a cohesive, loving, compassionate world, and kill off anyone who pisses me off. That includes murderers, chicken-hawks, neocons, Cheney, Norquist, Rove, or anyone else who insists on being evil.
So Newt will have to wait until I die before he can claim the job. Since I insist on being immortal, that's going to be a VERY long time.

(13,390 posts)Armchair psychology contributes to demonizing people with mental illnesses. It has been used time and again to demonize people as unworthy. Turnabout is not fair game as it validates and perpetuates the original wrong headed agenda.
Runaway slaves were classified as having a mental illness. Women have consistently been derided as less worthy because of their "tendencies to be more emotional." In order to prevent immigrants from entering the country they were classified as disabled.

(26,355 posts)Newt shows some seriously deranged behavior patterns, and I think we should be examining him using psychology and whatever other means we have at our disposal to better know him.
He wants to be our President, and a lot of people are supporting him. And I'm convinced because of his narcissism and his psychopathic personality, he would be an exceptional dangerous and destructive President.

(13,390 posts)A misogynist is just a misogynist
And a narcissist is just self involved, self important, and has a grandiose opinion of themselves without having a mental illness. Bill Clinton is very narcissistic in his own way. Every disagreeable behavior\trait is not a full on pathology.
You can make the argument that his behavior and ideas are a problem without pretending to have the facts necessary to make a valid diagnosis.
Pop psychology has very little credibility. Pushing this line of thought diminishes ours.

(8,646 posts)I don't think people realize how prevalent these disorders are, nor how our current systems of employment and government promote people with those types of disorders, especially NPD and AsPD. I wonder if that person knows up to 4% of the general population is AsPD and that the percentage is much, much higher in the business community and politics? Newt shows all the signs.

(13,390 posts)Since you are so knowledgeable, I hope that you have been kind enough to evaluate everyone you communicate with as that is much closer than viewing interviews and debates.
When you interview and do an personality interview with Newt Gingrinch, you may have something.

(50,130 posts)But Narcissistic Personality Disorder is quantifiable, possible to diagnose, and is indeed a mental illness. That's why there are diagnostic criteria in the DSM.
And while a diagnosis of NPD would most likely come from a mental health professional who has interviewed Newtie, it is CERTAINLY possible and reasonable for those whose lives will be affected adversely should he prevail to name what they see in him.
When I first saw George W. Bush on the public stage, I knew he was NPD. How did I know? I had studied the criteria and read many case studies. I had lived with an NPD-er for a long time. I knew.
I will say that Newt Gingrich is not only a narcissist, but more. He is a megalomaniac. Even more dangerous that George W. Bush was.

(26,355 posts)He doesn't care one whit who gets hurt due to his ambitions.
He didn't care how he hurt his first wife with cancer when he decided to "trade up for a younger model..."
And he shows the same behavior all the time in his political attacks.
He's a remorseless, conscienceless predatory psychopath.
