Newt Gingrich has been ordered to stop using the song "How You Like Me Now?" on the campaign trail. The GOP presidential hopeful was served a cease and desist notice from Third Side Music, the Montreal-based publishing company that owns the rights to the song.
Gingrich used the swaggering 2009 hit from the British band the Heavy at a campaign rally in Tampa last week as he tried to hold onto the momentum from his South Carolina primary win.
The following day, the Heavy posted a message about the campaigns use of the song on their Facebook page:
"If you heard How You Like Me Now being used by Republican, Newt Gingrich, in his campaign, we'd like you to know it had fuck all to do with us and we are trying to stop it being used. TWATS."

(47,675 posts)As Carlin so famously said, "Twat's twat and that's that." Good for them. I'll have to buy one of their CDs.

(23,796 posts)But can you imagine Third Side Music having the power to shut down a presidential candidate's online presence because of stunts like this? They all do it.

(28,552 posts).... that deserves to be enforced whatever it takes. This is the moral equivalent of claiming an endorsement not received.
I'm waiting for the day a really big act doesn't just send a cease and desist but sues the ASS off these jackasses who think they can co-opt a cultural message for their personal benefit.

(23,796 posts)And it really makes me laugh to think these idiot politicians are trying to pass a bill that would give Bruce Springsteen the right to immediately shut down a political campaign that used his "Born in the U.S.A." without permission. Actually, Brooks and Dunn would get that authority these days, or U2. Or even Tom Brokaw, with the Romney campaign using his likeness so extensively that it appears Brokaw is endorsing Mittens.
But SOPA/PIPA go much too far, and I'd guess you'd agree. Better as you state that they sue for their property rights, rights and remedies they already possess under the law.

(2,393 posts)Those are the only Repub "artists" I know of - the Repubs can't find anyone to give permission for their song use except for the yahoos above or some C & W folks - It's because no one that is cool is a Repub! The Repubs constantly bash the arts - which is dominiated by , uh, artists.

(23,796 posts)The Bush campaign used it in 2004, the Obama campaign in 2008, and now it seems to be ubiquitous on the C-SPAN reairings I've seen of GOP candidate events. Romney was playing it on a loop over and over again at his event.
