Has anyone else here seen Van Cliburn live in concert???

Last edited Fri Mar 1, 2013, 12:33 AM - Edit history (1)

He was a great pianist. I saw him perform a recital in Jones Hall, Houston, probably around 1970 or '71. Very tall man, big hands, friendly after concert, backstage.

I put this on my altar today:

I remember the melody of the major piece he played, although I can't remember the name of it.

which was a few years after he had become famous. He played in Indianapolis in Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University. That building is a huge barn. Lousy for acoustics, but a convenient place for busing in kids from all over the area. Most of us didn't realize what a big deal this was at the time. It wasn't just his artistry. He was a real symbolic figure at the height of the Cold War.

I live in a small city in Wisconsin, yet he was wonderfully gracious to us all.

PS - I have that same album

Or what the DJs called back in the Dark Ages,
"stacks and stacks and stacks of wax".
