About mean people

I've been away from home for some medical tests. My husband has been busy working, checking on me, and taking care of our dogs. I'm home now. I'm OK. That isn't what this is about.

My husband let the dogs out in the yard the other day and then he ran back inside to get some things done while the dogs played outside.

My screen door has an opening that allows the dogs to come and go as they please as long as the main door is open.

My dogs came running inside and both were bleeding. Some asshole shot both my dogs with a BB gun.

The little dog suffered a graze but a pellet penetrated my larger dog. Right on his bottom. He was bleeding a lot.

The pellet was removed and the wounds treated on both animals. The dogs are both healing.

The asshole also killed a Cardinal that was feeding in my yard.

My husband didn't see who did the shooting. He was more concerned about the animals than looking for the asshole.

A report was filed and turns out some mean (sick) people are going around shooting into yards with airsoft guns and bb guns. These assholes have broken house windows and hit other animals.

I felt so helpless. I couldn't prevent my animals from being harmed. My children - and they are my children - just wanted to play in the sun. It breaks my heart all over again just telling about it.

I hate mean people.

Although I did not have a pet shot, some kids shot out my truck windshield about a year ago. They also shot out several other people's vehicle windows and house windows to the tune of about $10000. It was pretty well known who did the damage, but no absolute proof. It "allegedly" was a bunch of the varsity wrestlers in our small community. They were on the verge of being state champs and so no one pursued the matter diligently. One person had the picture window of their house shot out and the pellet lodged in the wall next to where they were sitting.
Anyway, I hope your "children" are OK. It is like being violated, and you feel helpless.

I certainly hope that once caught, their parents are a) mortified and b) take A LOT of crap from their chain of command over this.

Being terrorized in their own yard affects their trust...they were shot on their own territory, damn. You know it does sound like it could have been kids. What sort of asshole kills a songbird or tries to kill someone else's pets?

I'm almost as pissed hearing that they shot that Redbird as I am about your woofie kids. I dearly love those birds and being on the West Coast, I miss seeing them so much, no Cardinals out here. One of the most trusting birds to welcome into your backyard. Just damn!

They WILL be caught, Solly. This would be enough to keep me up at night - so many emotions to process. Anger, fear, worry, guilt. I believe, though, that my main goal would be that these "people" are caught, and the more who know about it, the more likely that is to happen. Glinda's suggestion about contacting a TV station is an excellent one - this story will resonate with someone somewhere. You guys are great pet owners, and I'm glad the dogs are OK.

Usually the entire family is kicked off post when things like this happen. I live on a military post. That's in addition to other charges that can be applied. If it someone's child, the soldier can also get into trouble.

I'm so sorry----I hope they find these sickos. They're not just mean---something is seriously wrong with them. Most serial killers start out killing animals. Depending on the state, animal cruelty can be a felony (it should be in every state).

Last year, someone shot and killed a swan and her babies near my neighborhood. It was the second time it happened. It was some type of airgun (I think) and a reward was offered but they haven't found the person.

107. My husbands nephew shot and killed his parents dogs
Fri Mar 1, 2013, 07:08 PM
Mar 2013

They live in backwoods georgia. They have about 8 dogs, she's an animal lover especially dogs, and live in a trailer. I know it's a cliche. Anyway, my husbands nephew has had a history of drugs, and being an all around piece of shit. His mother, this kid's grandmother, was sick of it all and didn't want anything more to do with him after trying and trying after giving him chance after chance. I won't go into it, but he's stolen numerous things like her iphone and her even her car. One day a few months ago after he found out she took a restraining order out on him, he decided to do a drive by at her house. She wasn't home at the time, her husband was and he had just let all the dogs outside into the fenced in yard to have their dinner. He was able to see only a few seconds of it out the window, but this worthless prick drove up to the fence called the dogs over and started shooting with a rifle. One dog died immediately, another was paralyzed and couldn't be saved. Needless to say, mu husband and I were livid when we heard about this. Calling the cops did absolutely nothing since they are in cahoots with his family. These are the most backwater, bumblefuck cops I have ever seen. They said that my husband's father didn't count as a witness since he was the victim...?????? Things are looking up however, the little creep was in another bigger town a few weeks ago and was arrested by REAL cops after he was doing another drive by, led police on a high speed chase, and then crashed his car into a tree. They found numerous guns in his car. When I finally saw his mug shot online with a neck brace on and a bruised, bloody face, I laughed my ass off. He finally goes on trial in a few weeks. He doesn't deserve anything less then a lengthy prison sentence.

Yes, there are vicious sickos in this world. I'm glad you and your husband care enough to try and make it better. Anyone who'd hurt an innocent animal or person must be a sociopath. One neighbor I had used to reach over the fence to rile up my chows, then he'd call his police chief buddy and try to get me fined. That is, until I went to the city council meeting and raised hell for sure about it.

But I'm very glad your furkids are okay now. Try not to worry too much, but for awhile it might be best not to let them outdoors alone if you can manage. Know that a lot of people stand with you and wish you the best.

If there's any way you can manage, try to get your dogs poison trained. I trained mine that way, and they wouldn't touch a steak if they found it anywhere but their indoor food dish.

Many years ago one of my dogs didn't want to go outside. I started looking around and found a couple of BBs on my porch. I had seen the neighbor's kid with a BB gun a week or so before. I told my neighbor and oddly enough the police were parked outside the home a few hours later. The guy next door was kind of an asshole, so I'm not sure if they called the cops to scare the boy (firing a BB gun in my town is illegal), or they had some sort of domestic violence thing going on. Either way I didn't want to find out.

Some of the BB guns they sell today are extremely powerful. You're lucky your dogs weren't killed.

He moved out of the yard areas and placed his target at the wood line. If he lost an arrow it would go into the woods/ground and not in anyone's yards. He was a very thoughtful neighbor.

That is the thinking. My husband didn't see anyone but it is easy to hide in the woods behind my house. I've heard kids in there before but never had a problem with them. The trail leads out to another area that is several streets over and connects to other trails, so they could walk the trails and pop up anywhere in the housing areas. Lot of woods to hide in and escape detection.

Still, since this a military post, that limits their ability to hide at large. They will be caught.

This sort of thing has been done throughout history almost exclusively by young (usu. white) males.

My ex husband confessed that he'd done this sort of thing for funsies as a teen. Even as an adult, he wondered what the big deal was. "It's just birds," or "It didn't kill anything."

If someone doesn't have an innate moral guide that tells them on a gut level that this is cruel and wrong, you can't explain it to them. They can't understand, because they don't have that innate moral guide about other creatures.

It's senseless. You read about things like this happening and you shake your head and then it happens to you and all you can do is shake your head some more. Because it just doesn't make sense and you want to make sense of it. To try and grasp why anyone would shoot your animals. You read the literature on criminal and deviant behavior and you still ask yourself "Why?". Why my dogs and not the other dogs? All kinds of questions. And you know on one level that these things happen and you know it wasn't personal while at the same time being all too personal. That some sickos went on a random spree and my dogs happened to be in their path that day. Yet I look in their little faces and none of what I know matters. Someone hurt my babies. That's all I know.

Our kids all have 4 legs, so I have a lot of empathy for this. You, nor hubby, didn't fail them. The bad guys are the cause.

Sounds like you are already hyper-vigilant about retaliation whether it's another shooting or poison. I have seen these incidents happen in other communities over the years, so our dogs are hardly ever outside of the house without us. It's inconvenient sometimes, but never as bad as having something like that happen to them. Even so, they still wind up alone outside when I have to take firewood in or grab something, but I sure try to minimize it.

I make contact with new renters nearby, take them cookies or something, wave at their kids, nod at or acknowledge people who walk by. Once they see you face-to-face it makes it a bit harder for them to see you as a target. (There is some research out there about serial killers, many of them started on animals, so this can be serious, and worth some effort). I also walk the areas outside, more as just keeping a presence. It helps cut down on such threats. Your presence does more to deter such things than almost anything else you can do.

I can't remember how many news stories I have seen over the years about the discovery of a rise in animal abuse. Then it wanes, then it comes back. We fostered a dog, been about 4 years ago now. She was found as a stray with a two-month old bullet wound in her shoulder. The leg was amputated and a friend at the shelter didn't want her to have to recover in that dirty environment, so we took her in to let her heal, helped her outside while she learned to balance. She was adopted by a school janitor that took her to work with him. I am still amazed that dogs can still be so trusting, and nice, after how they are treated.

Give 'em some bacon for me
