doing the right thing

Last night I pulled into one of our local gas stations to buy gas. The price of gas had gone up a quarter in 2 days. I figured I'd get some before it went up any more.
I had noticed the price sign had been changed when I drove by @ 4PM. I was unable to get in to buy gas until @ 8:30.

When I went to purchase, I noticed that there was a difference in price between the sign and the pump. The pump was set 4 cents less than the sign. I purchase my gas, (I was the only customer) and immediately went in and told the clerk about the price difference. He turned kind of white.

He knew that they therefore had been selling gas at 4 cents a gallon less than they should have and the difference would come out of their paychecks. They immediately shut off the pumps and changed the price. And they called the manager. But who knows how much they gave away? BTW, I did pay the difference for what I got.

What makes me mad is that there were probably a hundred customers more or less who bought gas during the time the price was wrong and apparently no one said a damned thing. Many may have thought that they were screwing the gas company. The person getting screwed is the poor low waged employee.

I rarely, if ever, look at the price of gas, and the price of gas does not affect whether I buy it or not.

I own a gas station too. I once had a cashier set the price for .299 instead of 2.999. We sold nearly 400 gallons at that price before a concerned customer let us know. The cost was probably in the range of 2.93 - 2.95. Can't recall now. As a very small business owner, it was very very very very painful.

Most people DO try to do what is right, but very few actually pay this much attention to the small details in their lives.
