A chain email worth sharing :)

This is one of the few chain email messages that is worthy of being shared and forwarded, in my humble opinion. It seems to be incorrectly attributed to Andy Rooney but, in this case, the message is more important than the messenger.

I've learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned.... That just one person saying to me, 'You've made my day!' makes my day.

I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned.... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.

I've learned.... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I've learned.... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I've learned.... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned.... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I've learned.... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned.... That money doesn't buy class.

I've learned.... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned.... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I've learned.... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned.... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I've learned.... That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned.... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I've learned.... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned.... That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned.... That life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I've learned.... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've learned.... That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned.... That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.

I've learned.... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I've learned.... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned.... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.

I've learned.... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

I've learned.... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Here is the same in blog form in case you'd like to share it that way.

8. I've rescued hundreds of turtles. The one rule on the road - take them where they are headed.

If you take them back to the side they came from, they'll just cross the road again. That's not easy to do with an 80 lb snapping turtle!!!

and I find it dubious that you are carting 80lbs of *snapping box* turtle anywhere other than fantasy land.

10. Well, my wife and daughters can back me up on that. DAMN that thing was heavy - 2' in diameter.

I don't think I could lift something like that now, gotten older you know, but it was the largest turtle I'd ever seen.

I pulled over, put on the emergency flashers, and lugged the thing to where it was going. In the ten minutes or so it took me to do that, three or four SUVs honked at me for being on the shoulder of the road with my flashers on. They'd have just run over it, probably intentionally. I wasn't going to let that happen.

I've got a thing for turtles and save them whenever I can. As a kid they were always a treat to find. Even the most shy of them would come out of their shells to play with me.

They've all got unique personalities, but snappers BITE! Yes, it hurts. Box turtles love to be hand-fed fresh lettuce. I hardly see any of them now. It's depressing. As a kid I'd find one at least once a week. Now I'm lucky to find one once a year. I don't think it's because I'm not looking hard enough. I think it's because they're declining in numbers.

But that wasn't a box turtle. Biologically, they don't get that big and have no capacity to do so.

Other than that, glad to meet another herpetologist

I have a thing for turtles, too.

13. No, it was a snapping turtle. I thought I put that in an earlier message. Box are 6" diameter, tops.

The snapping turtles in N. VA are huge. They even have warning signs on the highway with pictures of turtles, sort of like the deer signs in PA. I always stop to safely escort turtles. With people doing 80mph it can be risky, but they deserve a chance and just because we threw a highway in the middle of their territory isn't an excuse to squash them. I can't claim to be a herpetologist, just someone who tries to preserve all life forms when possible. Turtles just happen to be rather vulnerable.
