Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe vetoed a controversial bill Monday that would have made abortions illegal after only 12 weeks, calling it "blatantly unconstitutional."

The measure includes exceptions for rape and incest, medical conditions that would not allow the fetus to live long after birth, and circumstances under which delivery would significantly threaten the life of the woman.

Lawmakers need only a simple majority to override the veto.

The measure, introduced by Sen. Jason Rapert, a Republican from Conway, originally would have criminalized abortion after only six weeks, but the measure was amended in committee after other lawmakers objected.

"I'm disappointed for all of the unborn children that could have been saved in this bill, but I have faith that the 70 percent of the Legislature that voted to pass the bill will be there to override this veto," Rapert, founder of Holy Ghost Ministries, told reporters after the veto was announced, according to The Associated Press.

I liked this article because it quotes Gov. Beebe about the huge cost such bills are to the state for the lawsuits that will follow. The ACLU of Arkansas says they will file as soon as the 'legislators' override the veto and it goes into affect in May.

We are definitely wanting to punish women in this state. No food for your children, jobs for you and you must bring children into the world you can't care for so that they won't have food while you don't have a job and all the safety nets have been cut.

The democratic party here is determined to do exactly what they have done for the past 30 years and it's not working, but oh well. It's to hell for the rest of us!

it hard to keep up with the horror. It all runs together these days.

Our state party is in such disarray that we'll probably lose the governor's mansion too. The Women's Club (yes, they call it that) is having a lunch today but there is no agenda and the president of the club wants to disband until mid 2014 "when people are interested in politics again." I ran against her in the committee and of course lost, because she is from here and "they do things differently here." Even the candidate (who lost) told me she was the most negative person he had ever met and theoretically came to the cc meeting to support me and then voted for her. So, I have little hope for the politics here.
