The tweet that beat an insurance giant: Twitter backlash helps family WIN its battle against

Blue Cross Blue Shield after it denied their daughter, 18, life-saving cancer treatment

A family left outraged by an insurance company's call to deny their teenage daughter life-saving cancer treatment took to Twitter to complain - and now the company has reversed the decision.

Lorelei Decker, 18, her parents and siblings were stunned when Blue Cross Blue Shield deemed the stem cell transplant surgery was not 'medically necessary' to treat her Hodgkin lymphoma.

The cancer sufferer, who said the treatment is her only option, took to Twitter to announce she would fight the decision - and within hours the topic was trending throughout her state of Oklahoma.

Lorelei added: 'Blue Cross Blue Shield denied my application for coverage of my transplant. They think it isn't medically necessary. My family is irate... My life depends on this.'

My husband had NHL too. He had stem harvesting. The a month long stay IN hospital to get the chemo and then replant his stem cells when chemo was done. It was a very hard procedure. Our medical costs we were zero dollars.

have my gall bladder removed. After surgery, BCBS denied my claim, saying it was a preexisting condition. This was based on prior gall bladder xrays and tests - test that showed no problems at that time. After being denied 3 times, I informed the claims supervisor they would be contacted by my attorney. I also informed her that I would be suing for mental pain and suffering. I hung up and not more than 15 minutes later BCBS called me and said my claim would be covered.
My neighbor worked for the same BCBS as a vp in marketing. When I was talking to him about my experiences he informed my they had done a study on denying legitimate claims. The study found a large number of people would give up after 3 or 4 denial of benefits. Tuns out this was an easy way to save on claims. Of course my neighbor said he would deny ever saying this if it went public. Goes to show you insurance companies are as evil as we think they are.
