Dear Friends:
Josh Fox, the director of the powerful documentary Gasland, asked me this evening to get the following message out. This is something that everyone can do. And it is extremely important.
I'll add that Gasland 2 is going to knock the socks off of the professional liars from the gas corporations, and their parrots and puppets in the government and media.
Please help us on this! It really is more important than I can say at this time. But I'm going to have more much more to say in the next few days.
Who knows? Maybe we'll have a DU interview with Josh Fox.
Thank you for your support on this.
Peace,
Pat
NEWSFLASH. URGENT. Tomorrow there is an important fracking hearing in DC. The House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment will hold hearings on EPA's testing in Pavillion Wyoming. Josh and his crew are being told they cannot film the hearing. CALL OR EMAIL CONGRESS NOW! Tell them Josh should be allowed in to film the hearing. It's guaranteed in the first amendment! Call tonight thru tomorrow morning. Thank you! Please repost!

(73,511 posts)if he is still on the internet. I'd rather get it straight from him, than give my opinion.
I'll try and forward this to my colleagues in the Environmental Law Society at my school (I'm the animal guy) (who also cares about the environment).

(73,511 posts)"they are saying we don't have credentials
it is an issue for all doc filmmakers on th hill
but it needs to be challeneged
it is at the discretion of the chair
the democrats let us in
the republicans have shut the door
but it shoudn't be a house rule
it is the 1st amendment"

(30,674 posts)yea, write our congresscritters, but this is Repub Political Security circling the wagons, and they hold the gavel in the House. Josh should have secured credentials earlier, if that was possible. Capitol Police are on the side of the Gavel.
A closed door makes a potent image in a documentary if done right. That would be my advice at this late date.
But DUers, do write or call the Dems on the committee, or friendly Repubs (are there any?)
H2O Man
(73,511 posts)get a response tonight, I think it might be good to ask the House Subcommittee what their reasoning is.

(12,471 posts)Everyone needs to know this. Gas is not the panacea to our energy crisis. Conservation is.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Doing that will stop many bad forms of getting energy that leave long lasting damage to living things.
RoccoR5955
(12,471 posts)People need to conserve, not use more. If we used less, there would be more for everyone, which is my point.

(26,449 posts)Great quote in the article:
[div class='excerpt']The committee recessed after Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.) called a motion to suspend the committee rules and allow for Fox and the ABC crew to film the hearing.
"... it's clear we have space in this room to film this hearing," Miller said. "If you claim that rule does not allow them to film, or allows you the discretion to turn them away, I move the rules be suspended so the fella who wanted to film for HBO be allowed to film this hearing and that ABC be allowed to film this hearing and all God's children be allowed to film this hearing until the room is too full for us to conduct our business."

(73,511 posts)was aware this could happen. He is a brave man. I haven't known him for long ..... though I was very impressed with "Gasland" ..... but in the time we've been acquainted, my respect for him has grown. Not just as an environmentalist, or a documentary film-maker. But as a passionate advocate of Amendment 1.
Things are going to heat up rapidly in NYS, on the hydrofracking controversy. I'll be keeping the DU community updated, as best I can.
hootinholler
(26,449 posts)Otherwise we get little here on fracking.
The islands are getting smaller and farther apart...It must be the universe expanding.

(13,669 posts)a really nice young woman who told me the hearing had taken place this morning, that a Dem. on the committee had asked to allow anyone to film, but the Republicans voted against it, and that Josh was hand-cuffed and arrested.
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to add my voice before the deed was done- and really frustrated that he was not only not allowed to film but was detained by the capitol police.
.... what a world.

(12,409 posts)and entirely support your efforts H2O Man. I have made all the calls I can today urging Josh's admission to the hearings.
That said, I am living in an area where 70,000 acres have recently been opened for gas drilling applications. I find it most important to witness this hearing no matter the source.
Science.house.gov will be broadcasting the hearing in it entirety, supposedly, tomorrow. All peoples interested or affected by these event need to know where they can watch the hearing and I encourage all those to tune in to the mentioned web site.

(4,507 posts)just to let everyone know about how to access the broadcast.
