He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are homosexual.
He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage. In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."
He has also insisted that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".

(135,425 posts)Now they can claim that they picked someone from South America, that they got away from the Euro-centric papacy, that they're engaging in "outreach"....but the guy they picked has an ITALIAN last name!
Guess the cardinals were getting piles sitting in that cold Sistine Chapel!
Both parents were Italians living in Argentina.

(135,425 posts)Hispanic is not strictly racial or ethnic, it's situational. Alberto Fujimori is "Hispanic." Odilio Scherer (another South American Cardinal who didn't make the cut) is the product of German parents, but he is from Brazil.
He's OLD, too...I think they wanted to continue the European thing, while faking an outreach, and put in a placeholder who will, in essence, finish out Benny's term.
This guy is 76 with one lung. If there's any bright spot, he's not much for pomp and circumstance. He also has the benefit of a good education, he's the first Jesuit in the job. He can't be worse than the last one, I'm guessing, but I wouldn't expect any dramatic changes...at least not at the outset. Maybe his rigorous intellectual training over the years will lead him to conclude that there are changes that simply MUST be made.
Or maybe not. Hard to know...

"Jesuit University punishes campus group for dismissing homosexual officer"
And OMG. You have to check this guy out. Jesuit Cardinal Martini. Pro LGBT legal partnerships of some kind. Pro abortion. Pro condom use. You just have to read this and check the kinks out. The Church is freaking right the fuck out.

And please, if I got fooled somehow, let me know. But here's a RW source, too. Only posted for verification purposes.

(36 posts)The Catholic Church is a bigoted organization. It's time for persons with consciences to quit the Church. Or sanction bigotry. That's the choice.
