President Obama explains the need for a Grand Bargain

“We don’t have an immediate crisis in terms of debt,” President Obama said in an exclusive interview with George Stephanopoulos for “Good Morning America.” “In fact, for the next 10 years, it’s gonna be in a sustainable place.”

See. That explains it.

do you care about the debt if lowering it means you 'll be poorer?
The debt is part of the right wing strategy to defund social programs. They run up the debt giving the money to the 1% then tell the 99% there is no money for social programs.
If we got rid of the debt and rethugs came back into power they would just run it up again.

If this doesn't explain why he thinks Social Security and Medicare benefits need to be cut, nothing does:

are adamant in not raising taxes. Wish the President were adamant that the fix for the many trillions of dollars of debt that junior recklessly and cavalierly created is to address the drivers of that debt rather to gut social security and Medicare. But that would require the President acting like a centrist Democrat rather than a pretty far to the right Republican.

And Obama's attitude that they do puts him on a par with any Republican as far as I'm concerned.
