GOP Assemblyman accused of pot possession on Thruway, voted against medical pot

ALBANY — Republican Assemblyman Steve Katz has been charged with marijuana possession after a Thursday morning traffic stop on the Thruway.

The 59-year-old was initially stopped at 10 a.m. for allegedly driving 80 mph northbound on the toll road close by the town of Coeymans.

"After noting the odor of marijuana, a New York State Trooper found Katz in possession of a small bag of marijuana," a State Police's press release states.

Katz was released on an appearance ticket, and is scheduled to appear in the town of Coeymans Court on March 28.

Katz currently sits on the Assembly's Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee as well as its Higher Education committee; last year, he voted against a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana. In recent weeks, he has been a strong voice in opposition to the SAFE gun control law, and has introduced legislation to repeal it.

That was a saying of one of my former employers. If it needs further explanation it's 'don't speed when there's contraband aboard.'

Not smart.

Keep it right at the speed limit and stay right.

For future reference, you should know that you can smell it in the cars behind you.

The state is wasting it's money and time. His arrest was wrong. The police officer has more important things to do than hassle a citizen for possession of a harmless plant.

The war on cannabis is wrong no matter who gets arrested.

Look at the dude he obviously needs medical marijuana to calm down.

We should stand with him to get this bogus arrest tossed out like all pot busts.

If we pursue this like american taliban, he will confess he is a "degenerate addict", he will go to court ordered "bogus rehab" and in the end the status quo will be perpetuated.

Likely we should hold him up as a stoner role model, kinda like the best olympic swimmer hitting the bong. Fact is millions use marijuana regularly and lead productive lives.
