"People say that the president and I both have trouble laughing at ourselves. We can't laugh at ourselves. That would be racist."
"I saw Joe Biden but I don't think he recognized me. He asked me to get him a Slurpee."
Three or four others about being brown and skinny. I'm not sure what to think. It's just plain weird. I don't think laughing at one's self is bad per se but in this atmosphere it has a creepy bootlicking feel to it.
Edited because I completely misspoke and said "racist" when I meant "racism". Sorry! Maybe a little Freudian because I think he seemed a little too self-effacing and uncomfortable.

(68,868 posts)Joe says some really dumbass things sometimes.

(10,751 posts)...it is a sneaky way to imply that Biden is casually racist, for which I have seen no evidence whatsoever.

(68,868 posts)not being able to go into a 7-11 without an Indian accent a few years ago.

(10,751 posts)...well I hadn't seen it, but I'll take your word for it and admit that I stand corrected.

(68,868 posts)"I've had a great relationship. In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking," Biden said.
Hillary made a similar cringe-worthy comment about Gandhi running a gas station in St. Louis.
Decent, non-racist people can still say WTF things sometimes.

(10,751 posts)...I really did believe you but it's always nice to have the actual quote.
As for your remark that "Decent, non-racist people can still say WTF things sometimes", yes that is true. Conversely, it seems to me that Jindal gets some slack on this as well. It doesn't overjoy me, but our guy left himself open, and it was a gentle enough jibe.

(68,868 posts)Everyone knows he means well, so Joe Biden jokes are kind of meh to me--not taking him seriously didn't work out so well for Paul Ryan.

(10,751 posts)...and usually I find it endearing, as I am sick to death of mealy-mouthed politicians who speak in sanitized corporate-approved phrases all day long. But I don't like racism and any politician should know better than to make comments like the one Biden made and also the one you referred to from Hillary Clinton. She also made some racially-tinged remarks on the campaign trail back when she was running in the primaries against Obama, talking about "hard-working Americans" to a very white audience in the heartland, and it was painfully clear she was trying to differentiate her supposed base from Obama's. I never had a very good feeling about her after that. Which may be unfair, but there you go.

(31,683 posts)Should we remove him? Should he be impeached? Should he NEVER get to be President? He also said that President Obama was 'articulate and clean as a whistle'. Look that up.
I'm a well educated black American and those are 'code words' - do you know what that 'code' stands for? It's a code. But I'd rather a 'code' -
That a bunch of prick asshole ignorant racists white guys on the supreme court and their one lackey rip away my right to vote. He'll never be as evil, ignorant, too wet too step on and too low to kick as say someone like Ron Paul (pal's around with Domestic terrorists and white separatist types).
Sorry - you won't ever get me to hate Joe Biden sir - agree to disagree.

(68,868 posts)Certainly if a prominent pug had made that comment, it would be within bounds to make fun of him for it.

(28,581 posts)Slightly different.
Sounds like more of attempt at humor then actually obtaining it. I'm sure trying to fit into the GOP is not always the most comfortable thing for him. I'm pretty sure deep down he knows that he will never be fully accepted there.

(41,915 posts)I often think he and Michael Steele and other minorities must do a lot of the kind of wondering that the more standard white male part of the GOP doesn't.

(27,787 posts)Those folks don't think they are racists ... they think they are victims who are not allowed to treat people differently based on their race.
And any attempt to protect a minority group from such differential treatment is itself racist.
Its Projection.
