I was up late last night to watch he first Formula-1 race of the season. The race was held in Australia and was shown live on NBCSports very early in the morning. This is the first year that network is covering this race series, they hired nearly all of the old crew from the Speed (Fox) Channel and so coverage last night was from seasoned professionals and was more or less a continuum of the sort of announcing of these races for the last quarter century.
So here is the situation: The race is about half over and a German guy is leading by a wide margin. That same German guy is quite young (25) and has been the World Champion at his sport for the last three years. Behind the German guy are an English guy and an Italian guy. The Announcers are smitten with the English and Italian guys but for some reason choose to let their rambling and often monotonous commentary generally omit any reference to the German guy. So there they are talking, the Announcers that is, and they tell us this quick little story where one time the Italian guy says that the English guy is probably the best driver in the world and at about the same time the English guy is being interviewed and he says that the Italian guy is likely the best driver in the world. Its a real god damned love-fest. So after the Announcers repeat this story once they sort of chuckle and agree with its overall wisdom; indeed it is either the Italian or the English guy who is the best driver in the world. But you know what, as they are saying it I'm sitting there watching the German guy, the same one who has been World Champion for the last three years, and he has just run away from both of them like they were in reverse.
Who you gonna believe, the talking heads on the TV or your own lying eyes? Does this sound at all familiar?

(13,257 posts)I don't get wrapped up in the championship titles. I enjoy the strategies and drivers/teams who are consistently good, even if they don't reach the podium.

(13,257 posts)Then he grew arrogant and whiny, and worst of all (I believe) got away with sharing secrets while others were punished.
Then I latched onto the Brit, until he got arrogant and bratty.
Now I go for quality.
Personally, I can't support a "winner" who behaves in ways I don't respect, no matter how much they're toasted by the press. I trust my own judgement. And I think that speaks to your OP.
