(14,656 posts)from Touched by an Angel and husband, Mike Burnett, creator of "Survivor" and other reality teevee programs, promoted their new Bible series. Roma said that whether one believes or not one should know the stories of the Bible. (Wonder if she feels the same about the Koran?) She plays the role of Mary, Mother of Jesus.
They quickly flashed through scenes in the series with the special effects depicting the parting of the Red Sea by Moses. They did show a scene with the devil shown in the link but it went by so quickly I didn't get a good look.
It is a striking resemblance and more evidence of the hatred of the President. (imho) I didn't watch it tonight....better things to do.

(14,656 posts)I wanted to see if his natural appearance is a true resemblance or if he was made up to look like the President. No luck. Couldn't find a picture. The title of tonight's episode is "Hope" ??????
Thanks Tx4obama for posting the picture.

His full name is Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni, but most of his films he is listed as Mehdi Oauzanni

(14,656 posts)Yeah, I saw he is appearing in two episodes. I also put my boots on and tripped over to FReeper land as it popped up in my search. Think your darkest thoughts and that's what's being said there. I think the creators, the director, the producers, the actor....all...knew what they were doing. It certainly has not gone un-noticed. Time will tell. In any case, it's taking a dark skinned person to portray evil period. Not good. imho

(53,764 posts)It's a young actress, after all Roma Downey has to be looking at 50. Also, the Satan character looked nothing like the President as it ran. There is a filter in Photoshop that can age people the more you dial it up. I wouldn't be surprise if there has been some manipulation of parts of this image.

(53,764 posts)Maybe later on in the series when Jesus is older (not aired yet) but the nativity scenes shown yesterday with Mary giving birth in a manger, definitely was not Roma Downey, who like I said, must be pushing 50. If that was Roma Downey their make-up artist deserves a lifetime Immy. It had to be a young 20-something actress. Picture manipulation, btw, is extremely difficult with moving images, unlike with a single still image that a skilled graphics person can created layer after layer in Photoshop and combine or delete or darken or age all or parts of images, and even superimpose a layer or layers of a manipulated image onto another image altogether. And it can be done seamlessly if the person doing it is skilled enough. I know because work in the field. I'd like to know the source of that image that's been plastered all over the web. Could it be . . . Satan . . . er, ahh, I mean some right wing site/source.

I also tutor in almost all subjects in the humanities--art history, history, anthropology, philosophy, Western Civilization, etc.
I am an atheist, but when I teach literature or any of those other subjects, have to make sure my students understand the historical and conceptual background of the material we cover, as well as the relevant allusions.
In the same way that our cultural foundation includes the Greek philosophers (especially Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle), as well as the Greek and Roman myths, it also includes the Judaeo-Christian scriptures and many, many centuries during which all of Europe was Christendom. You simply cannot teach the philosophy, art, literature, or history of the Western world without including the bible. I often have to explain to so-called "Christians" in my classes all kinds of stuff they are supposed to know about from their own religion, but of course they often don't know about those things, because even though they call themselves "Christians," for many of them that is just the name of a club they belong to, like being a Cubs fan or a Girl Scout.
Here's a good one for you. Three times I have been called on to tutor seminary students working on a master's degree in theology. They must study the foundational texts of their particular sect (in all three cases my students were training as Methodist ministers), but reading fairly difficult texts (the kind I call "chewy" is pretty much beyond a lot of students these days, so I walk them through the texts and explain the parts they have trouble understanding.
They are really lucky that I have such a strong ethical streak. I have often thought about how tutoring future ministers put me in a position to subtly twist their comprehension of the tenets of their faith! Of course I would never do such a thing, but it does amuse me to think about the fact that I, an atheist, am teaching them what they are supposed to believe and to teach to their future congregations!
Both of my kids are also atheists, but when they were young, I made sure they learned all the bible stories, too--right along with all the Greek and Roman myths, as well as the Norse myths and many of the myths of Africa, Japan, China, etc. They also learned the fairy tales and legends of Europe and the American West.
I never directly tried to tell them what to believe or not to believe--I figured that as adults they could make their own choices. Their dad and stepmom took them to Roman Catholic church services and had them baptized in the RC church. But I did make sure that they were familiar with a wide range of mythologies, which undoubtedly helped them to see how the biblical scriptures fit into belief systems of certain times and places. (They also knew that I was not a believer, of course--but since their other family were churched, I figured they weren't being pressured by knowing about my lack of belief.)
My very religious Sicilian-American grandparents kept boxes full of children's books full of bible stories. (They also made sure my 5 siblings and I were confirmed in their church when we ended up living nearby after Dad retired from the Air Force.) I loved to read those bible stories as a child, and when I was old enough to read the original (the bible itself) I read it, too, a lot! To me, it was just more interesting stories, and then when I got older, it also became a glimpse into another time and place, basically an anthropological study. Even as an atheist, my daughter attended bible study classes as a college undergrad, just because like me, she was interested in the stuff as literature and as a cultural study.
Richard Dawkins says he tells Christians that they are also atheists--but he just believes in one less god than they do, because they are atheists with respect to the gods of the Greek and Roman pantheon (and any other mythology they might be familiar with).
It is frustrating to me that my literature students--even "Christians"--cannot be taught to understand and appreciate poetry or stories until I first explain to them what the allusions mean, even when the allusions are to ideas, phrases, or images from their own religion or from their own scriptures! (For example, not one of the Christians in any of my classes for the last two decades has recognized the phrase "three score and ten" or understood that it refers to the allotted span of human life, as referenced in Psalm 90:
The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years,
yet is their strength labor and sorrow;
for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Just as examples, Shakespeare refers to this allotment in Macbeth, and so does A.E. Housman in "Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry Now." Here is a stanza from the Housman poem:
<snip>
Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.
<snip>
See what I mean?

(12,448 posts)How many hours a day do you spend bathing in the warm blue light in supplication to the God of Dumb?
The History channel? The channel that brings you such informative, historical shows as; The Bible, American Pickers (I don't even want to know), Pawn Stars (I live here believe me, they are not stars by any stretch of the definition), Men who built America (I feel certain a 21st century version of Horatio Alger's dreck), Ax Men, Big Rig Bounty Hunters, Swamp People, Ultimate Soldier Challenge...
I just can't look anymore, my IQ dropped 10 points just perusing their website to get the names of these shows.
For the future's sake, kill your TV. You don't even know how far you've fallen.

(4,876 posts)waiting for the Walking Dead to come on I passed a channel marked H2 which I think is supposed to be the History Channel 2. They were talking about "Area 51" and some huge military underground that exists under the whole country. The kicker was when they showed the narrator it was Alex Jones.
I shut the TV off and played guitar until The Walking Dead came on.

(297,136 posts)1. UPDATE (March 18): The History Channel says in a statement Monday:
HISTORY channel has the highest respect for President Obama. The series was produced with an international and diverse cast of respected actors. Its unfortunate that anyone made this false connection. HISTORYs The Bible is meant to enlighten people on its rich stories and deep history.
2. The Bible Executive Producers, Mark Burnett & Roma Downey said Monday:
This is utter nonsense. The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouzaani, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President.
3. The Bible Executive Producer Roma Downey adds:
Both Mark and I have nothing but respect and love our President, who is a fellow Christian. False statements such as these are just designed as a foolish distraction to try and discredit the beauty of the story of The Bible.

(16,191 posts)IMHO, they found one moment, and one camera angle, where he may have worn a facial expression similar to one seen in some Obama photos, but there really wasn't much of a resemblance outside of that one brief screengrab. Skip to the very end of this Youtube video to see the actor actually speaking...I didn't see any hint of Obama.
The actor isn't even black...he's a well known Moroccan actor who has played these kinds of roles before.

(41,959 posts)Yes, I only lasted 1 1/2 episodes in so maybe they did a little nod to the few stories in the Bible where women were anything other than manipulators and malcontents and prostitutes. But while they left out Lot offering his daughters to the angels (who were remarkably Asian and had mad martial arts skills) they blamed his wife for his breaking with Abraham in the first place, didn't hesitate to make Delilah a prostitute, forgot Judith and Bathsheba and Ruth and made Sarah a jealous schemer.
So I got pissed off and went home early.
