STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- The ordeal of an eastern Ohio community roiled by allegations of rape against two high school football players is far from over, despite the teens' conviction for the crime and their sentence to juvenile prison terms.
The announcement of the verdict was barely an hour old Sunday when state Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was continuing his investigation and would consider charges against anyone who failed to speak up after the attack last summer, a group that could include other teens, parents, coaches and school officials.
A grand jury will meet in mid-April to consider evidence gathered by investigators from dozens of interviews, including with the football team's 27 coaches.
Text messages introduced at the trial suggested the head coach was aware of the rape allegation early on. DeWine said coaches are among officials required by state law to report child abuse. The coach and the school district have repeatedly declined to comment.

(6,852 posts)I think is the very reason why there will be a grand jury. From what Dewine said I think the investigation is far from over and will go along for a long time.

In court, Ma'lik Richmond apologized before breaking down in tears.
"I had no intention to do anything like that," he said. "And I'm sorry to put you guys through this."
and the other boy/man said:
Mays apologized to the families involved.
"No pictures should have been sent out, let alone been taken," he said.
It sounds as if the first criminal is apologizing to "you guys" plural, males), not the sole female victim (who was not in court at the time anyway), for putting them through "this", i.e, the hell of the investigation, negative publicity, and trial. "You guys" could refer to his own family, his fellow football player buddies/party animals, etc.,
The other one refers to taking pictures and "sending them out", NOT the basic crime of abusing/raping/dehumanizing an unconscious young woman. Makes me think this is what that defendant heard from his family, buddies, & defense lawyers. He and they believe the only mistake was in creating and circulating evidence of his actions, not the actions themselves. And actually, it was his buddies who took the pictures and posted them, so in a way this criminal is blaming his buddies for all his troubles. Otherwise the victim would never have seen proof of her treatment, or if she had remembered any of it it would have been her word against the 2 young men who physically abused her, and the three other young men who watched. There would have been no scandal generated by the internet postings and these guys would all be on their way to college scholarships and pro-football careers.
If only these 2 jerks had committed their crimes in Pennsylvania and been tried as adults. Then they could play on a prison team coached by Jerry Sandusky!

(2,132 posts)No remorse for their actions, just that they got caught.
Those boys are disgusting, but their parents are even worse. In my opinion, it takes a lot of bad parenting decisions to raise a child to be so callous towards another human being.

Sarcasm: if only that little slut had kept her mouth shut, none of this would have happened. She fucked it up for the rest of the Rape Crew.

(14,549 posts)WTF? What is the payroll for 27 coaches? That is about $1.8 mil per year at $50K each. 27 coaches?? For one football team?

(2,132 posts)It's a high school. They can't possibly need 27 coaches.
This whole situation is just awful.

(5,762 posts)That excuses nothing.
In a shit town where the only thing going on is football, if you ever threw a ball, you can qualify as an "assistant coach."

(15,480 posts)". . . .No progressive positive outlook or actions. Now you may think I am being negative I am not, I am telling you like it is. This is a family oriented area which is completely mind boggling. The only good thing for the children is sports in the schools and the parents and adults involved become mini Nazi soldiers where it is all about them competing for attention and the children used as a means to do so, it's embarrassing and detrimental to the growth of these young minds for the adults to relize their examples. The pedophiles are regarded as a common occurrance and I was told to just get used to it by an attorney that it is "COMMON" in this area? Does that equate to acceptable? I worked in the hospital for three years on several wings in the hospital I was told "sexual harassment was common, completely unacceptable but, (without stopping to take a breath) we are all very close and we do not like problems so we try to handle that internally." Nice! I was also informed that the police and the hospital employees are very close along with the attorneys. " (I corrected numerous misspellings.)
