General Discussion

Christian Science Monitor has a piece by former Iranian president Abolhassan Bani-Sadr explaining new details of the "October Surprise". So far this has been met with only silence.

I was deposed in June 1981 as a result of a coup against me. After arriving in France, I told a BBC reporter that I had left Iran to expose the symbiotic relationship between Khomeinism and Reaganism.
Ayatollah Khomeini and Ronald Reagan had organized a clandestine negotiation, later known as the October Surprise, which prevented the attempts by myself and then-US President Jimmy Carter to free the hostages before the 1980 US presidential election took place. The fact that they were not released tipped the results of the election in favor of Reagan.
Two of my advisors, Hussein Navab Safavi and Sadr-al-Hefazi, were executed by Khomeinis regime because they had become aware of this secret relationship between Khomeini, his son Ahmad, the Islamic Republican Party, and the Reagan administration.

People who talked about this subject were called conspiracy theorists.
Well, shheeet, look who was right all along!!

(12,977 posts)Reagan didn't think up the October Surprise himself, after all. He had other people to do that sort of thing for him.

Really, for you youngsters out there, this is a B F D. We suffered through this stuff and got called all kinds of names, and we were right all along. We knew it.

(23,664 posts)I remember screaming about this in 1980 after Reagan was first elected. It was widely and openly discussed yet nobody seemed to think there was anything unseemly about it.
Hell, we can't even get the Obama justice department to do anything about the war crimes committed by the last administration. No way they're going to go after Ronnie after this many years. Or Nixon either for that matter.

(53,764 posts)If historical significance measured how much weigh is given to a story by the media, this would bring down the house, if we still had and independent and not corporate-owed media. St. Ronnie and his operatives not only committed treason (this much was not so secret) but played a part in actions that resulted in the execution of two Iranians. WOW! And no one talks about it. Journalist at one time would give up a first-born for a story like this.

(7,402 posts)Only Ford and Bush Sr. are missing from this and Bush Sr. has Iran-Contra hanging over his head while VP.
Four of the last 5 Republican Presidents have serious clouds hanging over their heads. So why do Americans keep electing them? Obviously, Nixon and Bush Jr. are two of the worst Presidents ever and why not because they both have a lot of blood on their hands.
